    Hey,

    IEM’s for DJ-ing, interesting option.

The good thing would be not having to put  them on, take them off like you would with regular cans. I think using wired IEMs is a no-no whichever way you go. I would always opt for wireless.

It’s a very expensive option. The only way to get it to a) sound right and b) sit right is by getting custom made earpieces. They will run from 300-400 upwards (1000 for a good one is not exceptional).

If you use one-sided IEM, you’d use it just the same as a regular headphone (assuming you use cans “DJ-style” so only one ear). Your comment about using cue/master setting is more relevant when you use stereo (either cans or IEMS).

When artists use (stereo) IEM, there will usually be an extra mic picking up sound from in front (audience) which will be mixed in with the monitor signal to prevent a feeling of isolation. If you use stereo IEM for DJ-ing you won’t have that opportunity, so you will be isolated from the ambient sound.

All in all I don’t really think I would go IEM, the ear with the plug in it will be “deaf” if off or you would have the master signal in there all the time.

It’s still an interesting concept and having played around with the wireless headphone option from DJ Player (where you use your iPhone or iPod and connect the headphone to it) I have to say I like that. At the end of the day I only wear my headphone the moment I cue up and the moment I mix, the rest of the time it hangs on my DJ stand (I don’t do the around my neck thing much) so I am not too bothered with the cable.

While I love my custom in-ears etymotics for listening to music, I would not use them for DJing. But that comes down to workflow. I am so used to using original cans for DJing over years that I just cannot imagine working differently… but I have seen some to use in-ears with great success.
