I think you should look at things separate. Your lucky enough to get paid as wedding DJ. But weddings are not really the place for dope new underground tracks I think. It is a once in a lifetime experience (well at least that is what the bride and groom hope for 😀 ) for your “customers” They just want to hear certain tracks.

But you can aim at doing both. So keep doing the weddings and also the tracks you really want to play as a music lover. You could use a different DJ name. Try to make way for yourself. And remember it is real hard making a living as a underground DJ. Maybe at first try to aim on doing a few parties. You also already got you connections as wedding DJ. Make separate business cards you can hand out at the weddings you DJ. Let them know that your also playing different music. put mixes online. Create a new brand for yourself. If that is what you want to do then go for it. But also remember that it might not come easy. But if you got passion for the music ( and you do ) then you are willing to walk that road.

Just do something else creatively and keep it up.

I just did some remixes for friends to spice things up… in very interesting genres… hehe

I would rather DJ a night of cheese
89 and have been for a long timethan a days work in my trade (as a painter and decorator). ANYTIME!
I do my own thing by mixing what I want at home and put them online.
I also think taking some time off might help you?

Yeah … or get into some parties with really bad Cheese Monkeys (shouldn’t be to hard to find, cause lot’s do stink at it) and get that feeling of “wohoo, so many people to show what a real Cheese Monkey can do!”.

But I hear what you are saying, especially if you have done hundreds of them and they don’t seem to provide a real challenge anymore (and probably haven’t for a couple of years either).

Some good advice giving here already. Don’t think it is wise to mess up a good thing (which I think it is, especially financiallY), better to find a secondary line of “DJ Work” where you can venture into some lesser known territory.

One thing I do when I feel bored sometimes (it happens to me too :-)), is ask myself “even though it just feels like work, would I rather trade it for feeling bored in an office?” and obviously the answer is always a heart-felt NO!

I focus on the people that matter, the birthday boy/girl, wedding couple, corporate sponsor/booker and realise what it is I am “giving” them. It’s usually enough to pick up the spirit and get into the groove again.

I would say to make an alias of yourself that separates you from your wedding/mobile business.

After that, do something small to start. Do podcasting or internet radio, or pick up that “pays little to nothing” guest spot where you can do more than play mainstream.

That or start toying with mashups, wild remixes, etc.
