    Basic music theory
Basic theory of song structure of the genre(s) you choose
    Basic lyric writing techniques

Until you have the above covered stay away from purchasing more gear… gear is only tools without the proper knowledge your productions will easily be recognised as amateur and discarded by any promoter/agent.

    Hello Terry,

I won’t release any sort of production or edits until I master the software (and by master the software, I mean master the ability to create quality music). But it’s my understanding that without the proper MIDI controller or external hardware device, I will need to use my typing keyboard as a piano – which is ridiculous!

What MIDI controller device should I invest into?

For editing/mash up, Ableton LIVE prolly suited more for that
And for MIDI controller, you can look for MIDI controller that has lot of keys ( i think its like 64ish ?) and a lot of knobs

Actually a smaller keyboard will do too, they can be had for about 50 bucks. And really any keyboard with a few knobs and buttons and pitch wheel is ok.

You’ll find out soon enough when it’s time to switch. I have a friend who does electronic music production and hasn’t changed his el cheapo keyboard in like 3 years. Claims that although a bigger, more expensive one will give him some easier access to some features, that in the core workflow his current setup works well and he is so familiar with it that he figures there is not much efficiency gain to be had for now.

Again, like Terry said, it’s not mastering the software (or gear) that is important. You can use VERY basic gear/software to produce awesome tracks, provided you have all the musical skills and knowledge. The other way around is not gonna happen.

So, grab books/videos/courses on the topics Terry suggested and dig in with the theoretical part.

Actually I have like 3 or 4 keyboards, but loads of time I spend only “testing” the melody on the keyboard and then writing it in the notation view of ableton or bitwig. As writing notes is much more exact than playing them, although Ableton and Bitwig can help you quantise it if you play it off the beat.

This is my current music production setup>>

    1) A Laptop [I use it for DJing and Producing]
    2) Ableton Live 9 Suite
    3) A Pair of Home Stereo Speakers
    4) A Comfortable pair of Headphones
    5) A Shure SM-58 Microphone.

This setup has worked quite well for me till now. I am just about to buy either the Novation Launchkey Mini or the Akai MPK Mini. And, Once I save up enough, I will buy a good soundcard like the Numark DJ io. Since I won’t be recording any acoustic instruments, that will give me good quality output as well as complete my DJ setup.

Home Recording For Musicians for Dummies By Jeff Strong was very helpful to me.
