MemberIn the end it’s all down to preference, there’s some nice opensource software as well, but it’s all down to preference of interface primarily.
Aside from that, there’s the samples.
Ableton Live has a ton of pre-made samples and virtual “appliances”, but so do FL Studio and others.
And then…there are VSTs, a sort of plugins, that can be used in different ways.
As an example, you can run FL Studio as a VST plugin to Ableton.FL Studio is quite popular among the “starting” producers, but it’s also being used by experienced producers in the hard-dance scene.
In the top segment, you’ll find that Ableton Live, Logic and Cubase are the most used, mostly in combination with said VSTs.You need to use what you feel comfortable with. The Ableton Live interface can be quite tricky to get used to.
My suggestion would be to have a bit of a go with FL Studio until you feel comfortable with the interface and get more experienced with everything. From making the beats to using effects to really get that sound you want.
In my opinion, that’s the point where you’ll really know what you want in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).
FL Studio has a cheap entry level version which might suit you best for now and if you run into the boundries of the software, that’s where you can think about upgrades to a more feature rich version or even another DAW.
And remember, it’s a creative process, so it’s always challenging 🙂
Just my 2 cents 🙂

MemberDont expect any of these programs to be easy at first…..
Anyways check out Cakewalk’s Sonar and Steinberg’s Cubase too. These have the form/GUI/structure of a typical DAW/Sequencer (Digital Audio Workstation) and if you learn how to work on any of them then you ‘ll have the basics to work on any of the rest of major players like Pro Tools, Samplitude and Logic. I would never recommend Live for production but thats just me! 😉

ParticipantIf you want to produce music you will need a program and if you buy a program you proberbly want
to get your money worth?? Then there is only one way to do it RTFM!!
Read the manual carefully from first to last page, ther is no way around it if you want to get it to work!Ableton is in terms of music producing programs a simple one and that program you can use to DJ with as well

Ableton Live is also very powerful, in my experience.
Most people I’ve spoken to find FL Studio easier, simpler and in the end, depending on the use, a bit limiting.November 3, 2011 at 8:08 am #9319Kranic

ParticipantI never spoke to anyone using FL and it is as I know not a Mac program am I wrong??
That makes it IMO not a pro prog like Ableton Live and if you look for something like that Garageband might be simpler?I compare Ableton with Cubase, Logic and Pro Tools wich are the only good music production programs I know of.
There is Reason as well but it is a sequencer prog…..I mainly uses Ableton, Cubase, Logic and Reason in combination with VST instruments and VST effects.
And Cubase for example is very much more complex and the learningcurve much longer than Ableton//Hessler

You are correct, but OP mentioned FL Studio and Ableton. So I’m assuming he’s looking for software for on the Wintendo platform…
I’ve also used Cubase in the past and it does have a high learning curve, but truly knowing Ableton…I feel that from what I’ve seen, I’ve barely touched the basics and I’ve done/used a lot of things already. In the end…it’s all down to personal preference and what feels good to use, for some it’s instruments, for some FL Studio/Reaper, for some Ableton, for some Logic/Cubase and for some Gameboys… But I guess real men should only use hardware… (Is the human body considered to be hardware? If so, check Youtube for Roxorloops.)
Was just responding to OP and assumed he’s using Wintel.

ParticipantThanks, both of you. I’m using Windows XP on my PC,and Windows 7 on my laptop, slowly I’m learning to work on Ableton, but I still need a lot of practice and work. 😉
