I recently got laid off from construction, so my strategy has been dj busking inbetween shows to earn income. I live in DC and will net 50-60 in 3 hours, and it’s a good chance to hand out my card. If you can get yourself smaller (albeit shitty) speakers and a portable power supply (spent about 150 for one that lasts 4-4.5 hours), set you kit up outside and just jam. Beats minimum wage by far, and it’s a great chance to meet new people. I don’t know what the populace of your town is though.

Im not sure what DJ Busking is, but i think i get the idea. Set up outside and play for cash New York style, right? That sounds like an awesome idea! I live in Gary though (EWWWW), so i’d more likely get robbed for all i have but that’s a great idea for when im at school. I go to a college something-or-other school so im sure all the college kids would love to drop a few into a hat…..or bucket?

Yeah; if you’re playing on campus turf, just get a permit or w/e is required, don’t know if it’s mandatory that you mention you’ll be collecting tips. It’ll also be a good way to network for campus parties I imagine.

I wish i could do campus parties lol. I’m only sixteen (turning 17 soon) so i dont know how that will work out. Also, what did you use for your power source?

A Schumacher XP-2260 12V X-Line Portable Power Unit kept my laptop/controller/smaller speakers powered for about 4-4.5 hours

I was running a 4trak, 13″ mid-2010 pro, and an ion block-rocker. It’s not an audiophile speaker by all means, but gets the job done and doesn’t sound like complete shit.

I have the Logitech Z313 speaker “system”. Would that work?

I would only recommend using the Logitech system for practicing at home.

Many cities have strict restrictions about playing music on the streets so it’s risky business.

@Coltrane: Yeah, after a little while of DJing in earnest with the speakers they sound good to an extent, but don’t sound like they’ll do too good in a big room or outside.
@Kent: I figured that, but at one point i know a radio station was set up on campus and playing music. Hopefully that means i can get some kind of certification? I dunno, I guess i gotta find the right person to talk to.

My question is: What speakers can i use that are portable while still retaining “DJ” quality?

The only thing I can think of is to try and find a good set of used powered PA speakers for a good price. Other than getting quality PA speakers, NietzSky’s suggestion of using the Ion Block Rocker may be a winner.

As for pulling in cash I would recommend doing odd jobs here and there since your school schedule or curriculum doesn’t allow extra hours. Your main goal is to get your education so take advantage of it while you’re still young. Trust me when I say having an education is essential to life. DJ’ing will always be here for you.

Perhaps there are some courses about music theory or classical, jazz, etc. you may be able to take? That’s something else to look into because you just never know how music from another time period, so to speak, can influence the way you’re able to hear melodies and be creative with a DJ controller, turntable, or in front of a mixing board.

This. I mean the worst case scenario, here is how it usually goes…..

Cop: You know you can’t be out here without a permit?
    Me: My bad.
Cop: Nothing against what you’re doing, just doing my job. Go to X, it’s not my district and you’ll probably make more money there.
Me: Alright *lug all my shit 30m to an hour away

Usually happens once every few days because I switch up spots a good bit. At the same time though, my roommates (indy band) got booked for a club/bar in DC just by playing outside/busking. I’ve also had people give me 100s before, so it’s always been worth it. If you’re not causing trouble, cops will just tell you to pack up. It’s only when you start being a dick that anything actually comes of it (least in bigger areas)

Just be careful DJ Sneak doesn’t get cheesed about your DJ name, then you might need even more money.
