I wouldn’t want exactly what is coming out of the PA, hardly hifi in most cases :-).

To answer your question, you left out one small, but major detail, budget!

If price is not an issue, than my recommendations go to the Sennheiser HD25-IIs (love the brushed aluminum anniversary version).
They are widely used (and possible the most used) in live sound and studio recording environments and have been a very familiar sight inside DJ booths as well.

Everything is interchangeable (if you don’t like the straight cable you can order a coiled one or vice versa, if the pads wear, you can replace them, and much more). The frame is very sturdy and will last you a lifetime. Mine travel in their (thin) pouch, in my mic case, on top of micrphones and slightly squashed by the foam inside of the lid. And have done so for a few years. Open the case, take them out of the pouch, plug ‘m in and play away.

If money is an issue and you are on a budget, let us know what you can/want to spend and there will be plenty people with good advice for cans in that price range.

    Top Vin!
thanks for the extensive feedback; I really appreciate it. So am down to Sennheiser.
Just a quick one, Sennheiser HD25-II vs the new HD8DJ; what do you think? which would you pick?

Not a fair question, as I do live sound and studio work as well. So anything labelled DJ will have to have made design choices making it better for DJ, so by definition not as allround, imho.

So, I would go with the 25’s, but read what Phil said earlier this year about the HD8DJ:

I’d personally go with the HD8’s (even though they’re way more expensive) just because I wear glasses and on-ears like the HD-25’s, the legend that they are, destroy my ears. I can keep ’em on 1 hour max before the pain hurts too much. Over ears I can wear all night 🙂

Only a few bucks more than the aluminum HD25’s :-).

I wear glasses too and don’t have that problem. My cans spend most of their time around my neck anyway (where smaller is better in my opinion :-)) I put them on my ear to prepare my mix … take them off … put them back on when I do the transition. Then in between occassionally when crate digging. But never an hour on end. Same is true for live sound and studio work. You use the cans to listen to details from time to time, but they are around your neck or next to your mixer most of the time.

Because besides looking cool, that is about it… they are very uncomfy, too much bass and no mids, they made my ears sweat and thankfully after 3 weeks they broke and I got a refund… to buy a second pair of HD-25s and have enough left for a dinner with a lady.

Beat By Dr Dre is more like a gimmicks, a fashion statement, wear by a snobby rich kids who think he/she a DJ, is a very very overrated products
