ParticipantFirst of all you are the one that know which music do you like. Don’t ever listen to anybody that is like: “You must play *input genre here*!”. You need to let that to your passion do it for you. Second, Phil’s course “How To DJ Fast” is one of the best crash courses in digital DJ-ing and it is highly recommended by me coz I learned all the basics from that course.

ParticipantI’m sure that you will never regret the money that you will spend on that course if you are stuck with your controller like I was when I got my too 😀

ParticipantStart out with music you like. When I started djing I started out with hip hop because I liked hip hop, then from their I just got better.

KeymasterWell the course is really good, but it does teach you the basics of DJing with digital equipment and not music selection.
Music selection is something very personal and you will have to follow what you like to hear. So stay calm take a deep breath, listen to a lot of different music (maybe use something like internet radio etc.) and then decide which tracks you like.
For example I listen to a lot of internet radio (for example “FG Radio” is really good for DJs) and have Shazam open on my iPhone. So as soon as I hear a song that I like, I hit Shazam and save it to my wishlist.
Later I go to iTunes and listen again through the previews of my wishlist and pick the top songs. The key is not to buy too much songs, buy only the top songs of your wishlist, those you get really excited about.
This is the basic to get songs that excite you and good DJing will transfer that excitement to the crowd.

This is especially true for married DJs who have to justify their spending :-p … nobody in particular in mind though!

ParticipantAlways start by mixing music that you *love*. The love of music is your strongest ally when learning to DJ, just don’t be surprised or disheartened if you don’t feel like you’re learning the DJ skills you think you need. Trust me, you will be and even when doing Phil’s crash course it may take a little time for what you learn to be perfected. The first year is all about practise and mixing the music that excites you.
Stick with it and you won’t go far wrong 🙂June 10, 2013 at 2:23 pm #41173Daryl Northrop
ParticipantDef start with music you already love, like the other people have said. Also, it’s good to hang out with other dj’s who are beginners, and others that are more experienced. I always learn new things when I do this.

DJ Cu..Cu..Cu..be..be..DJ Cube! *scratching* Ok, explain this one for the group. How did you end up with the Mixtrack Pro? Did you buy it on your own? Did someone give it to you as a present? If so why did they choose to give you a mixer of all things and not an iPod or something?
Surely, there is a reason why you have the Mixtrack Pro? Just trying to see if we can do a little soul searching.

You are welcome, it’s what we are here for. Well, that and to cover up the fact that we don’t have any real life :-).
