D-Jam
ParticipantIt just takes practice. In the beginning I totally trainwrecked everything, then finally could hold 32 beats together. Then it became 64, 128, and so on up to several minutes.
I use sync now, simply because it makes life easier. I don’t see why I should say no to innovationswhen they do the task I need them to do. Nowadays, knowing how to beatmatch by ear it more for fixing a bad blend when sync fails, or when you have a moment where you can’t use sync.

Answer: Whenever it’s easier to hit sync with properly gridded tunes that you know very well. I manually beatmatch when, like D-Jam indicated, there’s a bad blend or I screw something up. I do it when I need to.
Hessler, you’re right on when you point out that simply beatmatching all night can be boredom inducing—for the DJ and crowd. I like to throw in some dramatic shifts, with major changes in BPM, and you can’t beatmatch from 130 to 100, or at least you can’t do it without sounding like crap.
Which reminds me, I’ve been thinking about starting a thread on transitions, since beatmatching is something that can be somewhat automated (via sync) but you can’t go from psytrance to dubstep by pressing a button. I think a lot of peeps, including myself, would enjoy hearing tips and tricks.

When happens and you have about 4 and a half seconds to get your next tune up and going. When you want to change the tempo of multiple decks and keep them in time as you speed up or slow down quickly. There’s all sorts of little situations that would have me using sync. Beatmatching manually would be fine in normal playing situations though.

Member4.5 seconds to go? I wouldnt even bother beatmatching, I’d just cut from one song to the other. Done well, it sounds good too!

Once you’ve got beatmatching mastered manually, and know your tracks by heart, you’ll be surprised at how fast you can beatmatch 2 songs. All you need is just constant practice and patience.

MemberWhy don’t you try nudging the track either way until your 100% its out and then speed it up until its going to fast. Do this back and forth.
I find this works well.
Dont worry about software being accurate to 0.00. Just let it ride.

I agree with this. I’m sure it stems from my controller’s/software’s limitations, but I’ve given up trying to get it “perfect” manually. If I match manually as close as i can get it, then sliding over to the next song shouldn’t really pose a problem. But it becomes a problem when I want to do a mashup, falling out of synch 30 seconds later is maddening so I use the synch button after I get it as close as possible.

You mean moving it forward and backwards past the point of being in phase so you can hear what happens clearly?
