MemberI personally would have been straight up with him. Let him know that you believed that the equipment could do with a refurb. Or tell him to welcome DJ’s to bring their own equipment. You said it went well with using a battered up mixer and improvising with CD’s. Imagine how it would of went with CDJ’s and your thumbdrive?

ParticipantI think you made the right move not saying anything then. You were leaving on a very high note (good tip and being asked back for longer) so you don’t want to risk affecting that. You said you would contact him in the future anyway so when you do, mention all your concerns to him. The manager didn’t seem to treat you poorly so he may be a good, reasonable guy. He may not know about the conditions at all. The fact that he told you to show up with just a USB (something which was utterly useless and would have meant you could not have played at all) means he doesn’t know the equipment he’s got and is also telling other djs to just bring a USB. He will most likely be very grateful to you for pointing it out.

KeymasterGood point. Guess I will drive over to his daytime Café and try to meet him there under relaxed conditions and then talk it over with him. Since he seems like a nice guy this is prolly the best way.

ParticipantIn my experience, I wouldn’t really bother getting into it with him (unless he specifically starts asking if there was a problem with the house equipment, in which case you could mention that they aren’t able to read USB drives). The easiest way to deal with it is to say that for an extended set you would need to bring your own controller in. If they liked you they will probably just agree to that and you won’t step on any toes.

MemberI had a very similar experience this weekend. I was DJing a wedding and the venue had built in sound and lights. Great. So I get there and see whats being used and how. Well the wedding was interesting (for other reason besides equipment) but the lady who runs the place is interested in maybe bringing me in as the house DJ. So she said she would give me a call this week as I was leaving. I told her it sounds great and that I saw a few things that can be tweaked or need upgrading and that I would tell her about it when we meet up.
So I think the plan of you meeting with the manager and just mentioning things would be good. Also don’t give him the tone that everything has to be replaced at once…the price of doing that may send him into shell shock. Maybe do it triage style…worst thing first.

ParticipantWell from what you explained, the manager seems like the proud type. Spending a lot on visual effects to get a wow reaction from the crowd and talking about having the best that might also suggest he dosnt know much a out dj equipment so… You may walk on a thin line :
1. Telling him about the crappy equipment might upset him and you may pass as a diva;
2. He might take your word and buy brand new equipement.But… Do you think you are the first dj to talk to him about it? Specially if hes asks every dj to bring usb drives?
I would play it safe (since he pays so well) and request you bring your own equipement, and if he gets annoyed by that, simply say your more confortable that way, and one thing we say a lot in my day job, train as you fight, so fight with what your used to

He was very friendly and actually he started talking about equipment in a matter: the other DJs still use CDs and are not so “pro”, so he wanted to talk to me about his equipment and possible enhancements to the PA.
He even offered me a consulting fee if I tell him what to buy and hook it up, as he does not trust the dealers that much.
I told him all about digital DJing etc. and he was very open about it, but wants good gear for his CD DJs also. So we will visit his club when it is closed to look at the PA and then come up with a budget plan.So all worked out really well, as it was him coming openly to me. I did not expect such a nice outcome, but then it seems there are still cool club owners. Thanks for all your opinions and inputs, I tried to be really humble about things and I think he likes that fact, I will also try to go for a solid budget and keep it “real”, so I might skip the CDJ 2ks and go for something more reasonable priced for his CD owners and for a plugin option for controller DJs with good booth monitors.

ParticipantYeah I think you are totally right to not go for the 2ks…they are really expensive and specially in a club enviroment they WILL get trashed…its just a matter of time…and for the investment its not really worth it considering the majority of people that will come on there wont know how to use 1/2 the stuff on the 2000s or have not setup any of their tracks with Rekord box to fully utilize the 2000s. 850s or 900s imo would be the way to go, with a DJM800. Those are still pretty much club standards from what i have noticed…Since you are a controller DJ you might wanna push for the DJM900 since they already have a traktor certified soundcard…but thats just to benefit you and not the club lololol.
Other than that Kudos on the gig bro!!
