MemberThe first time I did a gig in public was a frat party in school. Since I didnt know what I was doing I just took request and what people were screaming to put on. Since that time I know now what to play and when to play it, which is very important when you are djing.

MemberI have to say that my First Live Gig was Awful :(;
But maybe just putting it in writing may help Diminish the Memory a little;
I was 14; and had been asked to DJ for my Sister’s Daughter’s Engagement Party;
Trying to Avoid any Misunderstandings I had asked on at least 4 occasions for a list of their Favourite Tracks so I could include them; but nothing was forthcoming;
So; for the First Hour I played an Ambient Set; which was received Incredibly Well;
But around 40 minutes or so into my Main Set (which was Club Orientated); after I had played a Track that could have been Conceived as ‘Risque’; I began being approached/harrassed by Males who had taken Offence at the Track …
I may as well say what it was – ‘Gillette – Short D*** Man’; – and things became Quite Ugly until I told them if they wanted me to play something else then they would have to supply it; which they did by going home and picking up some Complilation CD’s; which I then played until the night ended; it was quite Crazy really as 80% of what were on the Compilation CD’s were coming up later in my Set anyway; so it seemed a lot of Fuss for nothing really; had they initially read my Track Listing which was available;
I was obvioulsy playing the Gig for Free; but wasn’t even Thanked by the Host; so I decided that I would Never play a ‘Family Gig’ ever again; and I am Pleased I have stuck to that; as the General Public are Much More Ameniable;June 27, 2011 at 12:34 am #858DjSpekz
Member@Emma I’m with you on that one, I hate doing family parties because 1. It doesn’t pay 2. they request to many songs that do not go with whats playing currently.

MemberHeh, in another thread I mentioned an unfortunate incident that occurred at my first ‘gig’. This past New Year’s Eve at a buddy’s house. I offered to DJ and he thought it’d be a good idea. This was only after a few months of screwing around with VDJ Home Edition, and after only a week familiarizing myself with my Mixtrack Pro.
Needless to say I learned a ton that evening, but luckily no one really cared about the small details which only trying ears would take note of anyway, and I didn’t make any mistakes that disrupted the flow of the party. Biggest thing I took away was how to select tunes.
But for a first gig, it definitely helped that it was a bunch of my drunk friends who really didn’t care too much what was going on with the music as long as it didn’t stop 😀

KeymasterMy first “mixing” gig was in a bar and I was that nervous I had my set including all mixes planned out and written down on a postcard hidden in my record box!

MemberMy first gig went really well! I played the first hour in a bar where everyone had come from a boat party. So it was early but there was a ready made up for it crowd.
I got the through a friend of a friend that I basically begged to play for.

ParticipantAh the first gig.
You never forget it.Through a family friend, I unexpectedly got called to dj for a wedding reception. There were to be 200+ people. I really wasn’t expecting the opportunity (I thought it would be like throwing myself to the wolves), but I didn’t want to pass it up. I didn’t have any equipment at the time, just virtualDJ and a pc.
It was a tricky situation because the dance floor was full of teenagers who were used to a college-type/club atmosphere, little kids who wanted Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, etc. , and older people who wanted more old-school, traditional tracks.
Was a bit nervous throughout the night, made a couple of mistakes. Tried to cater to all the different types of requests.
At the end of the night, everyone seemed to have had a good night, and I did a much better job than I thought I did. Got quite a few compliments.
Since then, I’ve only gotten better and more confident in my abilities. DJed at a bar, high school prom, etc.

ParticipantMy First gig
Well first of all, i’ll say that DJ EENGENIOUS’s description ^ of his first gig describes mine almost to the T! It was a wedding for a family member and I offered to do it cuz I thought it would be fun and I could get some experience playing out. I was using VDJ7 Pro and a Mixtrack Pro. All the way from the pre-ceremony easy going tunes to the reception which lasted till about 11 at night, I was behind the decks just havin fun. Everyone told me what an awesome job I did and it made me feel great. I had to play quite a variety of music to please the different age groups and music preferences. I had to play a lot of country, which i really dont care for at all. But i got to play a lot of fun stuff and some of my top 40 favorites. I got to do a little bit of mixing/smooth transitioning between rock, country, top 40 and dance tunes (cha cha slide, electric slide, macarena, etc.) which was really fun but for the most part I was just picking the right tunes and keeping it interesting and fun. I did not however get to play any EDM, 🙁 which is my love and the reason for my becoming a DJ. The crowd there just didnt fit that type of music. But I still had an awesome time, learned a lot, and got tons of compliments. I think what I learned the most was how many requests you get as a DJ!!! Every 5 minutes I had someone coming to me with “will you play this” “do you have that” “we wanna hear some more of this”. Its a trick to please such a diverse crowd, but i think i did it as well as it could be done. Overall great time, so glad I did it, and now I’m super anxious to play out again!!!!!

MemberMine was Bizarre. I won a competition online to dj in a giant Igloo in Austria. I had to snowboard down without breaking my macbook (i’m terrible at snowboarding) and in the middle of my set Fatboy Slim walks in which was totally surreal. Very memorable and only one mistake but is an amazing memory that will remind me of my first set forever and so much fun!

Participantmy first gig was for a high school dance where all the kids wanted nothing but teach me how to dougie and other nonsense songs… i quickly learned that it really is about keeping your crowd happy despite if your not the biggest fan of songs.. I quickly switched venues though to crowds who appreciated house music haha

MemberFirst CD gig – hectic. I had barely enough tunes to last the night, I hadnt learnt to beatmatch properly yet, so about half the mixes were just trainwrecked, and everybody kept asking me to play the worst music. Even thrusting forward ipods at one point. But I learnt a heap that night, one of which is never play for school!!!
First digital gig – hectic. I had a half-hour of power at the busiest day of semester down at the uni tavern, and hadnt done a proper gig for over a year (heck, I hadnt mixed for nearly a year!), and straight out had to mix from the prevoius DJ’s drum n’ bass into my electro – not the easiest feat. Apart from my Traktor library going somewhat haywire (and it hasn’t done it since, so go figure!), the gig went of pretty well, with some of the pros commenting on how well it went!

MemberMy first gig was at this bar right next to a strip club. It was on a tuesday night. I think I spent more than 4 days prepping. I wasn’t as nerveous as I thought I was gonna be but I was sweating a lot 🙁 The place was so dead by the end of the night they only people I was playing for were some of the strippers and my friends. Good times, good times 🙂

ParticipantMy first gig outside of that birthday party I did for my older brother was ok.
It was some big college party with a plethora of DJs, and first we were waiting on the gear to show up, but these guys were late. After that it was more a waiting game for everyone on the lineup to get a turn. Wasn’t well organized.

ParticipantMy man, the first gig I ever had, two years ago, I was a total mess. I mean, I didn’t screw up or anything. But my hands were shaking all over the place, I spilled some of my drink on myself and basically I didn’t have fun at all.
At one point, my track was 8 beats away from ending and I didn’t load anything to come up next. That was my make-or-break moment, because I am very proud of my reaction: when I realized what was happening, I looped the very last two beats and loaded up my favorite track. While I admit they didn’t fit one another in terms of style, at least I avoided a crowded room and a few bartenders from looking at me straight-faced. 😀 -
