Well why is the EQ there in a PA speaker?

Easy it is simply there to let you adjust the speaker to a not perfect room. Aka in a standard environment you would leave all the EQs in the middle position (including the FREQ) and do the soundcheck from your mixer.

Now in a not so perfect world these are the things that happen mostly:

    – Bass gets sucked up by some carpet or curtains etc. You need to adjust this with the BASS EQ.

    – High Freq gets reflected too much and it sounds like a tin can (tiles in the room, many windows without curtains,…) you need to adjust with HIGH EQ until it sounds right

    – Mids are different, the worst thing that can happen is that your mids trigger some resonance in the room. Now the thing is that those resonances are room dependent and not always the same frequency. So what I do is cut the mids totally when I hear a resonance (usually some kind of purrrrring sound or clattering sound) then go through the frquencies with the MID FREQ knob until the resonance is gone. You just hit the right frequency. Then I turn the MID EQ up again as much as I can without having the resonance sound.

Now some sound techs will tell you that even those things should be done from a good mixer and they never touch PA speaker EQs, but our world is not perfect and as DJs sometimes we use no PA mixer that has adjustable mids…

    Hope that helps you.

Great Advice. All of which leads me to another question…

I’m more of a mobile DJ, playing bars, lounges, house parties, etc. Sometimes, I run my Controllet directly to the active speakers and sometimes I use my Yamaha Mixer in between. Would you say its best to EQ on the controller, and/or the mixer, and/or the speakers?

Of course, I want a good sound leaving my controller (Kontrol S4). I like to be able to set me speakers during the gig  and pretty much leave them alone (unless adjustments are needed).

I usually will turn off the EQ on the Speakers and bypass the settings on the speaker. I then, Make sound adjustments on my controller and/or mixer if I’m using it.

Am I on the right path?

    Short answer? No. LOL

You can use the yamaha eq for room eq. Set and forget once you start playing. If you don’t use the yamaha, use the speaker eq for room eq (sparingly!). The controller eq is there for fx purposes mostly, or the occassional eq-ing of a really lousy sounding track 🙂

When doing room eq remember less is more. Take away the bad sounding bits, don’t try improving things by turning up the eq.

    Greetinx.

So, if I’m using the mixer, I can turn off the EQ on the Mackie Thump Speakers and do room EQ from the mixer eq’s.

If I’m going straight from the Controller to Speakers, use the Speaker EQs.

Both scenarios, I can pretty much find a good setting and leave it at that.

I’ve already got the hang of using the less is more theory/method of room EQing. It actually sounds pretty good.

Thanks again, Everyone,  for all of the help and replies
