Yep, Yamaha AG03 or the 06 should you prefer it. I have mine setup as my external sound card with my Rokit monitors attached.

Slightly off topic, but keep in mind that what makes the HS7s fantastic studio monitors is also the same thing that makes them terrible for just sitting around listening to music for an extended length of time – they highlight audio imperfections. The HS7s have a very high listening fatigue due to the extremely flat response through most frequencies, meaning they can actually become unpleasant to listen to.

Not saying you can’t do it, but if you do, and you do find your head hurting a little after awhile, you might want to consider getting something a little warmer for day to day general listening.

    🙂

Wow that’s really good to know, so does that mean I shouldn’t be using the HS7 to DJ with? Should they only be for music production? Do you have any speakers you recommend to use for general purpose listening with my computer or record player? And any amp/DAC combinations you think also work well?

    Thanks for the responses guys.

You can always connect your Dj devices to the computer and have the audio be played through the speakers connected to the computer. I have a ‘normal’ Yamaha DSP AZ2 Amplifier hooked up in my studio with 2 sets of speakers connected that gives me an excellent sound for listening and preparing my music. I have my two workstations connected to the amplifier and to one of them, my secondary, I always have my DJ setup connected. In that computer I have all my old but still very good audio recording software running on a disk with Windows XP. Everything else, I use booting from another drive running Windows 10. The audio card is an old but very trustworthy Creative Audigy 2. Running the sound through the computer makes it also very easy to record everything I play on any of my DJ setups. I know you can do this on one of your usb ports on the RX, but doing it in the computer saves you the time to transfer the file when you may want to share it or edit the file before using it for something. I use XP because of my older audio and recording software, but just routing and capture the sound works just as fine in Windows 10. All you need to do is to find a nice output level on the RX that matches other sources you have, and then adjust the line input level in your computer, and you’re ready to go.

As I said, the AG03 (or AG06) has a built-in soundcard. It let’s you record as well as play back. Just plug your gear in as you would any mixer and presto, master output of your mixer available for recording. High (24-bit) quality as well. And I love having a volume knob to control my speakers/monitors and my headphones.

As for speakers. Tip one: 2017 = no need for amp/speaker combination anymore. The quality of powered speakers is such that you don’t need the extra hassle and cabling. Tip two: While it depends on what you will be listening to and why, this being a (digital) DJ forum, the best advice I can give you for practice and listening to dance music, with the added bonus of being able to take your speakers and play the odd house or BBQ party as well, is to get a pair of (used) small PA speakers – say 10″ – with stands. Get a good brand though. Or, especially if you want some more low end, you can look at the 2.1 systems many brands from HK Audio and LD Systems sell or 1.1 systems like RCF has. It depends on your quality desire and budget.
