http://digitaldjtips.com/forum/threads/dj-downtime.7453/ check that thread out. Everyone hates on us fx-whores, but I still believe when done properly it can really add to a set. Mind you, even as a fx-guy, I don’t touch flang or phase =).

If you haven’t played live yet, I would strongly suggest you spend every moment you have watching the crowd and learning to read it properly. It will be 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 times more useful than learning effects. There’s lots of posts abou that.

Most likely you’ll be so busy with the distractions of a live situation (requests, equipment issues, crowd reactions that force you to change your plan, etc.) that you won’t have time much time to stand around.

I’ve seen many who are really doing nothing but acting. You’ll see them tweak and play with a channel that’s not in use, or do the “dramatic knob twist”.

I see big time DJ’s doing this all the time. Mix Mag’s DJ video’s they have are full of this stuff. If you, the listener, can’t hear the difference, then they shouldn’t be doing it. Period.

What you, the DJ should be doing, is reading the crowd, listening to the music, and getting your next track/sample/fx ready. That matters 1000% more than these DJ’s who appear to be pressing buttons every second they are in the booth even though there is not a bit of change in the track.

I tend to cue tracks a lot when live. I also almost never do anything quick so you can see me having a track playing a minute or more in the background without hearing anything from the speakers (which gives me a room for some trickery in appropriate spots). Other than that I just try to have fun.

I like the “dramatic knob twist”, especially when they are rocking fatboy slim and know there will be an effect coming 😛
It is like playback singing hehe

In my bedroom and online sets I can get bored in downtime and start messing around with stuff I shouldn’t, but when playing live, there are constantly people annoying me or talking to me (often the same thing) that I end up not having enough time, and on occasion (although I try not to), I end up pretending to do stuff, just so people think I’m busy and leave me alone. Sometimes it’s just beat matching something I’m not even planning on bringing in.

Sometimes, i worry about this game. What do you actually mean by you want to look busy in the booth?
I actually always wish i had a bit more time cos i am grooving and moving while i am in the booth.
If you are bored in the booth then it means you are not spinning the music you like. DJaying is meant to be an enjoyment not a sentence where you have worry about what others perceive of you physically

Do like a Guetta and jump up and down with your arms up while your levels are at zero.

be busy? you are always busy… setting the next tracks, giving nuances to the blending… making mash ups and most important of all watching the people
