ParticipantFrom what I’ve seen in my research about dj-ing the hardest part is breaking in, and one of the best ways of doing that and setting up a foot hold is a crazy well done marketing campaign. Afterwards its the music that will land you the gigs. Actually I think it becomes a balance of both image, who you get to know, and of course the most importaint part… your style of music.

Albin0Panda, get this to your head:
If you need to add “not being a dick” to whatever it is you are blathering on about, then odds are quite likely you are being a giant dick. Your comment was rude and completely out of line.
Dave had a perfectly valid question – he wanted to know what is working for people with regards to their marketing materials and how they are positioning themselves. He didn’t say he didn’t think music mattered, or any of the other bs you ranted on about.
The whole purpose of this forum is to share what is working and what isn’t so that those with more experience can help out those with less. Your attitude brings nothing to the discussion. Get over yourself.
Aight dude, listen up.
The point I was trying to make is that you shouldn’t worry about your image. If someone shuts you down just because of your image or marketing approach it shouldn’t discourage you. If you all took that as insanely rude, then you are some weak-minded peeps. You and the people around you don’t get anywhere by telling people what they want to hear. You want me to be polite? I could easily tell him “hey, just keep at it, ol’ chap! Don’t be like everyone else.” but I don’t because, even though I don’t know him, MAYBE I want him to do get somewhere being the DJ/future producer(maybe) he is. I didn’t directly tell him to quit. I just laid out the choices… although, quitting completely would be ridiculous.
And Dave, if you’re reading this, FUCK anyone who doesn’t take you for who you are. Serious. Do your thing like everyone else says, and I think you’d be way better off. Just my opinion. Let’s think of it THIS way since everyone is being prissy little girls about it: Say the “cool” guy gets the booking… and sucks shiiiieeet. Then you get a booking somewhere else, and you kill. Try again, and maybe it’ll be different the next time. Like I said before, if you got the skill, then you got more opportunities than the wanna-be “cool” guy.
Shitty part is the initial booking though. If you got the “In’s” then it’s a lot easier to get your name out. If you have no connects, then you just gotta keep plugging.

ParticipantImage counts a little, but not as much as one would think.
There’s too many guys out there now doing the tough-guy urban thing or hipster thing or European prettyboy thing.
Only time you should care is when you’re selling it as part of your product. Like Deadmau5 with his mau5 head and light show. Dress nice and such for nice photos to use for press purposes…but other than that…be comfortable and be yourself.
I think in “image”, you should work to get great, flattering press photos. That’s about the most. You don’t want crappy amateur looking ones.

MemberThanks for all the responses, really appreciate it.
Albin0Panda, I think it’s just your tone mate. I don’t think there is any ill intent in your posts but your comments can definitely be construed as rude. Referring to everyone who made note of what you said as ‘weak-ass peeps’ probably isn’t very wise either. It may simply be a cultural difference but if I called everyone ‘prissy little girls’ when they suggested I offer some constructive criticism they’d probably think I was a cock. Thanks for adding to the debate though.

Participantdave, thank you. At least you of all people understand me. That’s good. :]
everyone else can go cry in the corner of their room and curl into a little ball because I said some ever-so-hurtful and dreadful things on the intertnet :*[
Random: Lockon Stratos… you’re name is awesome. I doubt anyone here knows what that’s from. Nerding out. :]
