MemberIt very much depends on where you are from. Since you’re there for the whole night, you should easily get at least $150. Unless you’re in the St. Louis area, in which case you should totally ask for $75/hour, and tell me where you’re djing.

ParticipantId say it depends on the venue. If they have everything in place, and all you need to bring is CDs or a midi controller, then 150 is good for a 4 hour set. However, if you have to supply the venue with speakers, lights, mixer/TT/Controller, and your entire mobile set up, you could fairly get 200-250. Another scenario I know alot of people use is getting a guaranteed base pay of, say, 150, and a promotional bonus depending on how the night goes. Before the event make a deal with the management saying, if ‘X’ amount of people show up, or the venue makes ‘X’ amount of sales, then you get paid an additional bonus at the end of the night. This way, if you bring in say, 40 people, and fill the venue, you can get a bonus for a good show, and good sales to the bar. However, even if no one shows up, or you trainwreck the entire night, you’re still guaranteed the original 150.

ParticipantThanks so much for the input. I’m in Waco, TX. Really all that’s in this town is Baylor (National champs if you didn’t hear by the way :)) so there’s a decent bar scene but there’s nothing so far as a night/dance club goes so it’s a bit unusual to see a live dj. I’m hoping that works in my favor!
And 2Shae, all I need to bring is my controller because the venue has provided everything else. As I imagine everyone is, I’m all for guaranteed pay so I’ll definitely push for that if all goes well tonight.

ParticipantSounds like a nice gig! I love patio parties. If you are just starting out, don’t get into attendance-based top-up pay yet. They tend to be tied to also paying for and running the promotions for the night, and if this is your first gig you want to ease yourself into it a little. As for what to charge, it very much depends on the area. Around here a “show up and play” show averages $150 – $200 depending on the night of the week. Bringing anything more than a controller (or whatever you use) has extra charges involved.

ParticipantHey congrats on the gig man, I bet you’re gonna totally kill it!!!! (that means do well) 🙂
If you do really well and everyone enjoys it, why not have the amount of money you get paid tied to the amount of money the bar takes in?

First i gotta say, you have the greatest DJ name of all time, cheers. And I agree with this post, as long as your getting a guarenteed base amount, no matter what the sales are. This way you can put alot of extra effort into promoting, and be getting paid for your time to do so. Your time will be worth it in the long run because the venue will get great business, and chances are, you will be getting a call back from them for a repeat performance.

ParticipantThanks so much for all the input everyone! The night went off spectacularly and the owner asked me back next week! He’ll get in touch with me Monday or Tuesday to talk details and now I’ve got an idea of what to aim for. Thanks again!
