MemberFirst gig was two weeks ago and it was a charity fundraiser with about 200 people. My first ‘real’ paid gig is this coming Friday at a night club and will be $100 plus free drinks.

ParticipantI got $100 for an hour set, but to be honest I would of been happy to do for less than half of that.

MemberThree bucks fifty.
Back in 89 some friends and I, sick of being stuck in traffic at midnight on NYE driving around looking for the best party to be at, decided to have our own. Out in the country, not too far from Adelaide in Austrlia, we hired a hall, PA, generator, etc etc. 80 people showed up, we had a blast. But when we balanced the books a week later it turned out the gig ran at a minuscule profit of something just over fifteen dollars, which divided amongst the five of us amounted to $3:50 each.
Ha! Had a hoot though.
Kept doing the show for a few more years and ended up with around 3 to 400 people coming evey year , made more money, learnt heaps about holding a big event, and, most importantly. Had a great time.
The first gig is never about the money.November 5, 2012 at 1:02 pm #31381J-Zed

ParticipantI used to spin records back in the late 90s at house parties and stuff. I never really had my own tables because my roommate was a dj and he is who got me started. After a couple of years we parted ways and I went on to military service. Years pasted and i got my 1st gig as the opener for my other guy who had a weekly thing. There was no talk of money and I’ll tell you the truth, I didn’t care. This was my first experience playing out in a live crowd in a long time and I just wanted to see how I would fare. Well I totally kicked ass and thanks to my 6 months of everyday practice on my little vestax 300 mk2, I once again fell into the Dj thing. My guy even kicked me down $75 and I only was on for 2 hours. Well my buddy went on to bigger things and I’ve upgraded my equipment and have everything a mobile Dj needs. In addition, my guy gave me the night there and depending on the bar tab, Im making anywhere from 250-350 every saturday night. Not quite ready to quit my day job but hey, Im paying my rent plus a few bills all because I was willing to start off at the novice level.

ParticipantFirst paid gig was originally a 45min reggae set in a well know club in BKK. The promoter liked my set so much he had me come on again later for another 30min…. total pay 2500 Thai Baht (about $80 US)

ParticipantFirst gig ever for me was my nephiews birthday. It was something i had done for him as a birthday gift but at the end of the night, because it was one of those clubs that splits into two seperate dance rooms, the owner of the club actually gave me 400 Euros for managing to bring in one of the biggest crowds that club ever saw.

MemberI traded my Premier Drum kit to buy my first dual rec. player mixer combo , to do Dico dances at High Schools for $100 US. that’s about 500 today. I was not liking the thought of splitting 200 between 5 band members! Learned at 17yr’s old , what a pain HS dances were, moved on to corner bar gigs that paid 150 and drunks were more fun than tweens. And beef and beer’s, weddings, topped them all, even got flashed a few times, priceless.

MemberHmmm, well my 1st public gig was free. I got into a partnership w/ a few ladies to start a dance event in a bar once a month here in San Diego. The dance events were free of charge at the door. We wanted to test the waters w/ the local community on how it will turn out. So far good!! 4 months later…next month, Feb 16th, we are charging at the door. 80% of the money that will be collected from the dance will be paid to me. Another venue just signed me to a paying gig on Feb 9th. 3 hrs long @ $250, so I guess this will be my 1st paying gig…I am really excited and blessed to find this passion of dance music and being able to share it with others as I continue to learn…and getting paid is FUN too!! 😀

MemberI am a Mobile/Bedroom DJ so I don’t do clubs. But my first gig was a NYE party for my uncle who has this huge barn that he turned into a dance hall! There where about 150 people mainly teenagers. Great first gig huh? I got paid $75 an hour for 3 hours plus I had a tip jar out which i got $27 from. I had to only play Pop, some Rap, and Country (Which is one of my least favorite genres 🙁 ). Stuff like Gangnam style, Cat Daddy, Teach me how to dougie, Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, The Wobble, And alot of other filler songs like Adele, One Direction, Taylor Swift, ect. I don’t really prefer these genres and songs but it was a blast anyway.
