ParticipantI think you should do it this time but express how it makes you feel.
And try to use your experience as leverage; try to get the best spot you can, get them to sponsor you to play at other Events, etc.
Hope that helps.

ParticipantYeah, 20-30 minute sets are beat, I get comfortable after the 15 minute mark, and the 30 minute mark is usually when I’m ready to start busting out cool shit.

KeymasterI agree you should ask for a 60min set at least. This is as low as I go.
If there is an agreed time where I should start then by all means I throw off the other DJ if he overextends by more than 1min, as every DJ should be able to transition within 1min, else he is no DJ.
Usually for a standard club night I would say 3 DJs is sufficient and 4 is manageable. I like to have at least 2 if I can, as DJing a whole night alone can be tiresome, but then I am getting older and used to do it with a blast in the past heheFebruary 7, 2013 at 11:48 am #36343Richard Driver
Participant4 djs with 1 1/2 slots is the min. unless the compensate really really well for your peak time slot

ParticipantThis mentality boggles my mind, a club I tried to play once tweeted they had 9 DJs! WOW 9 DJs! Like it was a good thing, so glad I didn’t get caught up in that playing 30min sets. Honestly though you seem like you work really hard on this, see if you can try to find somewhere else. These throw as many DJs at the crowd as you can clubs are very lame.

ParticipantAt least make it interesting with that many DJs and tell the promoter to host a Battle !

ParticipantI would discuss it with the other djs and draw straws or whatever to decide who’s going to play that night. 30 minutes isn’t good for the dj or the crowd.

MemberThanks for all the feedback everyone! I love the idea of hosting a DJ battle, but the sad thing is most of these DJ’s can’t even beat match! The other crappy thing about having 9 DJ’s is that 6 of the 9 booked are on laptop/controllers. So we literally have this line of tables spread out in front of the DJ booth with a sea of audio equipment. We use a four channel mixer connected to the booth so we would constantly be switching out cables during the live show (and I HATE messing with audio cables during the club) when each DJ starts their sets. It’s a circus!
I went ahead and sent the promoter a message letting him know I don’t appreciate booking so many DJ’s a night and reducing our already short time slots even further. I decided to take the night off instead (I don’t remember the last Sat night I had off! haha). I might use this as an opportunity to check out some competing venues and hand out a few demo CD’s! =D

MemberThe Venue is using 9 FaceBook/twitter accounts to secure a steady crowd! Your expected to promote them, not them promoting YOU! They WILL fail and blame everyone but them self’s. 9 are you kidding me…… no good can come from this in the long run. I’d look around, real hard to find the next gig, before the other 8 catch on. Hurry your wasting time reading……..

ModeratorI am sure most of us that have done weddings, events and such are sitting here flapping our ears. 4-9 DJs a night ?!?!? Instead of wondering what to play you’ll be stuck wondering what NOT to play :-p.
Usually we will be all by our lonesome and do our 4-6 hour stints solo :-).
The nasty thing I really dislike when you play with other DJs, is that you pretty much need to be there to listen to all the ones that played before you to prevent from playing any of the songs already played that night. Can’t really afford to just barge in 5 minutes before your alloted time and go for it without having any clue as to how the night developed to the point where it is at, can you?
How does that work for you guys that run into 4+ DJ nights?

ParticipantYou shouldn’t really be barging in 5 minutes before your set anyway. IMO you should show up early enough to get a sense for the crowd and if any of the djs play the same style of music as you do it would be preferable to show up early enough to hear their sets that way you don’t double up any tunes. To the OP, I think you made the right decision.

ParticipantIf a promoter has too many DJs in his repertoire and doesn’t want to dis anyone, then perhaps he/she should variate.
So you have 6 residents…put three on on Saturday and the other three on the next, switching back and forth. Have 1 guest DJ on top of that. Someone who brings heads.
Two nights a month means the other two nights the DJs can seek out other gigs.

Participantmost times the promoter gets every body together to talk about these things like music selection or dj booth manors. or more of what i see is the promoter will higher djs that play within a certain genre for the night like dirty dutch to electro to trap and end with dubstep and not in that order per se
