Holiday pay in the U.S., like most industries is usually double. So 2x. If you’re not a big name or don’t have a guaranteed and proven following, then you don’t really have leverage to negotiate off expected attendance or ticket sales.

If anything negotiate for something like a free tab or bottles for you and group of your close friends.

See, that is what always interested me. Back in the day it was rare for me to have a single friend visit a gig I was playing, let alone hordes of them. And having a part of my pay go to pay for their drinks was something I wouldn’t even consider doing.

If your friend is a dentist, you don’t go sit in his waiting room all day and expect to be treated for free right?

Organizers and owners don’t mind you bringing “friends” and preferably loads of them, but only if they pay for their drinks. Freebie friends are no good to them.

On-topic: I am not from your neck of the woods, so can’t comment on what a regular fee would be. It would also depend heavily on the gig, duration, type of venue, the following you bring, etx.

That is true about the free tab and stuff, which is why I suggested it as a way to add value to the compensation package without inflating the actual paid rate for the gig. Helps the negotiation, especially if the owners agree to do something like a free bottle, because where I’m from, you almost never stop at just one bottle. =)

And actually if you do bring a group of friends to a gig, it would help the promoter or organizer pack the place, especially if attendance was a problem. Again, getting them thru the door is half the battle. If a free drink ticket gets you thru the door, what are the chances you actually leave after just one drink?

Here in the UK, it’s normal for a mobile DJ to charge around double their normal rate for NYE.. Or if they are expensive to start with, just their normal rate.. Most put their prices up though.

I wouldn’t comment on a number as they 1) Get lost when talking about multiple currencies and 2) Are meaningless anyway as we are all in different economic areas, different venues, different types of events..

NYE is the one day of the year where DJs are in high demand. Every crappy restaurant and the ally behind it wants a DJ that night. So there is room for someone still breaking in to get a foot in the door.

As for fees, I use a totally ridiculous formula: I figure out what I would have spent going out, double that amount, and that’s my ask. If I can get it, fantastic! If I can’t, screw it, I’m going out.

I like that idea Todd.. I reckon I could charge more than double what I would spend going out though.. By quite a lot.. I’m just sorting out a quote for NYE and no way could I spend that much on a night out.. 🙂
