Im kind of in the same situation as you. Ideally i spin mostly house tracks at steady BPMs of 125-130 so mixing is generally easily. For hip hop I generally start with slower tempos and build up through the night. If your going for beat matching, and your stuck between a 80 and a 128bpm track, try to find a version of the song with a built in transition. I made a basic hip hop/dance mix tonight without built in transitions, but I feel it would of been much easier with some of them. Check it out, maybe itll give you some mixing/song ideas for your upcoming set.

also….I tend to do alot more cue jumping then using effects in transitions. alot of hip hop has no intro that you can easily beatmatch the outro of the song on the opposite deck. jumping cue points works well for hip hop mixing, you just have to know your music down to the smallest details (bar/beat counts, EQ qualities etc)

I’m in the same boat and have been having trouble with it as well. I’m learning that, for the most part, you need to abandon the long (meaning longer than probably two bars) mixes that come so naturally with EDM. Hard cuts (with some added effects for style points) are the way to go, otherwise things quickly fall apart as I imagine you’ve discovered. That djtechtools link has some good info as well. I’m interested to hear any other tips.

Frosh and 2SHAE are on the right lines. Quick, sharp mixing and using cue points all point to a better hip hop set than long mixes. I use my technics when I play so can scratch a bit plus I like to use loops on Traktor which helps no end when you want to extend the short intro of a track coming in and you can then cut across and let the vocals kick in. Never underestimate the power of looping beats in a hip hop set.

Heres a short classic hip-hop mix i did a while ago. as a hip-hop dj of 30 years,it about mostly impact and bpm since the bpm of hip-hop varies greatly, you really have to be on top of it (as youll see with some of the mistakes i made here LOL)

Are you playing tracks delayed behind the original when you make that studder effect?

it depends on how i feel. i usually have a track going when i loop out a track so the transition is as smooth as possable other time ill let the track loop out about halfway and then start the next track
