MemberSoundCloud is my Main Source for Audio these days as I like to Promote New Producers; and the ‘Discovery’ of Audio ‘Outside Of The Mainstream’ is something I find Really Exciting 🙂

ParticipantI buy most of my music from Beatport. iTunes apparently doesn’t allow Malaysian citizens to buy music. The CDs in my local shops don’t sell music I want.
I find reading music blogs are the best way to discover new music. Most bloggers would have their own personal input towards a song and would generally describe a song well. Downside is that these bloggers often stick to a certain genre

Same with me. The Hype Machine is my number 1 port of call for blogs, and if any blogs consistently post music I like, I’ll subscribe to them. Sometimes the blog will let you download the music, sometimes not. If not, then it’s off to Beatport.

MemberI personally can’t stand itunes – I avoid dealing with it at all costs, hard when you consider I have a Macbook, an iPhone and several iPods. I scan through blogs for new music – download and quality check – sometimes the sound quality from blogs is suspect. If I’m buying my routine is scan beatport and create an order – sleep overnight and replay the list. Choose the ones I like and check amazon.com for them (usually they are cheaper than beatport), if not on amazon then I buy from beatport. The one reason I like digital is I don’t have to buy a mediocre album for a great song. I still listen to certain artists full albums but that’s for pleasure not business.

How do you go about finding the right style of music? I’ve tried to do this on Soundcloud but I struggle to find the right genre of music.

MemberI use Beatport to look for stuff and then buy it in JunoDownload if they have it

MemberMy workflow currently is to use beatport and juno to browse new releases, add to cart, then hop on over to emusic to snag them on the cheap.
I got on the emusic bandwagon before they changed their pricing structure, so a 256k VBR MP3 tune costs be 21p. Instead of £1.15 at beatport/juno. I can deal with the insignificant quality loss for that price!
Anything that I cant pick up through emusic I pick up through one of the other online retailers. Usually when they have a promo code available somewhere 😉

ParticipantPlease post links for the websites suggested. That would be helpful to all. If someone can explain or write an article about Beatport that would be awesome. I have it on iPhone and find it very confusing to navigate. The website is just a cluster-f on my eyes too. I play thru the top downloads but after awhile it all sounds the same and I just give up.

ParticipantPS. I just got an email for 6 month unlimited downloads to http://www.breakzrus.com/ for $100. Anyone use this site?

MemberMy take with Beatport or Juno is focus on record labels and artists that I know – add them as favourites so its easy to find out when they release new stuff.
Also look at the “other people that bought this also bought…” sections, so you can see what other people with similar tastes to you are also buying.
I don’t bother with the genres on Beatport or Juno as they are rubbish – their definition of, say, progressive house is very different to mine.July 1, 2011 at 2:08 pm #1000758Benny Mackney

I understand that one! I love some of the less well known stuff. There’s always some really unique sounds out there.
I also buy a lot of tunes off Beatport (only recently started buying music legitimately, so about half of my purchases thus far have been rebuying tracks I love).

Hello Rob :);
I found that Searching for ‘Genres’ on Soundcloud wasn’t much good at all;
So I found that ‘Joining Groups’ gave me an Opportunity to Peruse (at my Leisure) Artists that I have never heard of; this has been Amazing for Dubstep (through the Massive Group); but for other Genres too; the ‘House’ group has over 60,000 Tracks; the ‘EDM – You Sexy Beat’ Group has over 47,000 Tracks; there are 2 Groups called ‘House Nation’ with 80,000 Tracks between them – but; if you just Search or Explore Groups (underneath the Log Out Button) you can take your pick – I don’t Join Groups unless they have at least 30,000 Tracks Available (showing their Popularity); and to be Honest; I Only listen to Tracks that are Downloadable; this is how I Build my Collection 🙂July 1, 2011 at 6:21 pm #1000767DJ Stone Crazy
ParticipantiTunes won’t work with my software. So, I stopped wasting my money with them. Usually, my favorite way to get music is CDs. Sometimes, MP3s over the internet comes out crappy.

Member@Emma aren’t all the downloadables on Soundcloud low quality? I suppose you could always ask for a better version?

Hello Rob :);
Yes there are Definitely Tracks on Soundcloud with Low Quality; but if I find an Artist I Really Like I just write to them; tell them that I would like to use their Track in my next Radio Show and ask for the .wav file; and I have Never been Refused yet; and of course this Builds an Association where we can get ‘Exclusive Tracks’ 🙂
However; Tracks Recorded in 32 or 24 Bit .wav and then Converted to 320 can Often be Very Good;
But; that starts the .wav VS 320 WAR so I Better Shut Up 🙂 -
