ParticipantI have the DJAY by algoriddim app on my iphone and brainstorm ideas / transitions / mashups while at work (It allows you to record also) Then when I get home I can try them out in Itch/NS6 with the songs properly beatmatched and with effects etc…
Also, just having a job where you can keep the earbuds in all day while you work gives me 8 hours of new music discovery a day (via podcasts/soundcloud/itunes). I find its easier to discover new music while letting it stream in the background and having a tune strike/catch your attention instead of really focusing trying to FIND new songs i Like.

KeymasterIt is good to find one of the excellent DJ music pools out there, some are free and others cost you considerably less than buying 10 tracks a month. Most have excellent pre-listen on their webpage which mostly also works in the iPad. I like to pre-listen when I have downtime at work etc. and then download what I like at home or on the weekend. I find such pools very cost effective and due to excellent lists (comparable to mix cloud) made by fellow DJs nice to browse through. Some even allow you to make you own list to share with others.
I will not recommend any pool as probably each caters to other types of DJs and what I like might differ from what you seek.May 10, 2012 at 5:17 am #1004204Steelo

After hunting for a while I find it very tedious sifting through tracks and it all starts to sound the same.

MemberGeez, guys, you took all my tips already! 😀
I take my iPod to the gym, out mowing the lawn, etc. and listen to podcasts and my new music over and over again. This helps me:
• Discover new music, as mentioned.
• KNOW the music I already have. I might, on the fourth listen of a song, suddenly have some epiphany about how it might mix into an old classic, for example.

Membermy greatest joy in DJing is providing my friends and family with music that they personally enjoy. My sis loves al the CA hip hop that wouldn’t be part of her day without my influence and work(mix cds) I also make bluegrass CDs for my dad, classic rock and books on tape CDs for momz, and I keep the cousins buzzin with rock/rap mixes which they seem to find very refreshing compared to the current state of pop hop.

MemberI listen to a bunch of EDM on my iPod/phone/laptop when on the go, and write down songs that would go well together as a text message draft on my phone. Like Phil, I upload my music to a cloud server (Mediafire for me!) so I know I can have it easily accessible in case anything happens! I try to search for new tracks on a daily basis in between school and work, something I wouldn’t be able to do if digital crate-digging didn’t exist!

KeymasterDoes Mediafire not remove all your stuff if you don’t log in for a certain while?

That has yet to happen to me, but on the other hand I do try to make it a habit of logging in at least once a week, so I can’t say too much about that.

ParticipantHere is a good tip for finding more time to look for music/practice.
Two years ago when I moved back to NYC I decided to not get cable, and almost giveup TV completely. Now instead of watching TV I crate dig, or spin practice sets.
Very few times have I sat down and watched 2 hours of TV and been glad I had done so.

ParticipantWhen I had my own office, I kept an X-Session Pro in my desk and would work on new mixes when I had down time. Unfortunately when they moved us into cubes I stopped doing that (since I have no privacy now).
I’ll still listen to tunes and find new stuff, but I’ll be honest it’s hard to find time to DJ for me with work, household responsibilities, and family/friends stuff always popping up.

ParticipantMy job allows me to listen to music all day, so I usually just throw on a mixcloud set with a tracklist and then just jot down tunes I like, then when I get home I go through my list and start getting what I need. I also click random tracks on Youtube and when I’m at home I’ll just randomly browse Beatport.
While finding new music has never been an issue, I find it’s the tagging, sorting, labelling and organizing that drives me nuts and takes most time.

MemberI work in a hotel over night and when no one is around and listen to the tunes on my iphone. When I get home I can listen to them louder as everyone else is at work and try out a few mixes.

ParticipantDuring work when I have time I will sift through beat port. Otherwise I spend most of my time mixing and practecing at home unless my girl is over. I am getting another laptop and will be able to focus on practise while she is there also. But this is all changing as im setting a very focused plan into action.
