How do you effectively use Twitter & FB?

With Twitter keep it on topic. As a DJ only write about music and DJing. Leave your thoughts on politics, football and women out of it. Most people that follow you won’t actually know you for real. People will follow you because they are interested in what you are interested in. I have three twitter accounts for just this reason!

I find Facebook is more useful for people you actually know. So you can let them know what you’re up to in a friendly way, but don’t keep spamming them.

I’m actually working on an article of this for the site.

What I can tell you is you need to ENGAGE people. That means you’re not just posting events, but you’re posting stuff they’re into. I try to post stuff all the time. Sometimes it’s links to new mixes I’ve done or new blog entries I’ve written. Other times it’ll be cool blog entries and articles that I think fit the whole DJ thing. I also post 2-min clips of tunes I think are cool on a tumblr blog and then post links to the individual entries on twitter and facebook. People get into it.

The reality is you need to be an aggregator of content. Constantly give stuff you find so people simply choose to follow you because you’re a convenient source of stuff. From there, you engage in conversation. Look at Deadmau5’s Facebook page and how he’ll post something that leads to much conversation.

Well, you actually could. Sometimes I’ll use others as my aggregators.

So let’s say Phil posts a link to an article he wrote or just liked, and I think it’s utterly cool…I’ll then post it on my social media. There’s no rule against it…but if you’re going to let’s say repost everything I post, make sure your fan following isn’t full of people who follow me. Or else they’ll call you a phony.

Even with Twitter, start by following people. Anyone you like. I know when someone follows me, I’ll look at their Twitter feed and see if they’re posting stuff I like. I’ll follow them back if they do.
