Criticism motivates me to keep pushing forward. I have friends who listen to my mixes, telling me straight up to go back and fix a part of my mix where I messed up. I mean, at first I thought I did my thing haha but they keep me motivated to go harder the next time…and I’m thankful for that.

“Well; Why Did It Suck; did the Person Tell You Why; do they have the Authority Of Technique and Skill to Say That ?”

99.9 percent o the time the answer is big fat NO..the majority of critisim comes from people who are looking out for there own interests when it comes to dj’in ….example being, I played in a bar and some pretty middle aged woman come up to the dex and says “can you play something else, people are leavin and no one dancin” she was sober..as I look out to the floor I see folks skankin out smiles a plenty..”she then goes on to say im such and such if it wasnt for so and so you wouldnt have played” so I turned to her and was polite to the point of being rude (if she was a guy I would ave got my mate over and chuck a egg at her 😉 …. I get the rage from people with no concept of what dj’in is about seem to think your their persoal jukebox they say jump you say how high sort of thing…the only critisim that should be taken onboard is from the person shaking your hand saying you made their night/day/weekend the rest of em can get to f……

I get a kick when the criticism is geeky.

For instance, I have some debating if my recent tech house mix is really tech house…like that’s the important factor of our lives.

Personally i feel very happy because it means that someone was really listen to me, i prefere criticism instead of a “it’s ok” “nice” “good” that means that people prefere doing their things….

i know…… it’s hard to create a sound that makes people really enjoy your mix….it’s hard but we must do that xD so study, work and improve! I really hope that because this “job” isn’t a job for me…it’s a dream!

for me it depends on whos doing it. if its just a normal clubgoer i smile and nod and move on,if its some dj who just came out the bed room ill listen and if its something useful ill take it in. if its a dj of long standing who knows what there saying ill take in and learn from it and try to make myself a better dj from it

Precisely! Why the f**k does it matter? I had a chick come up to me one time saying that “this isn’t chicago house”, even though it wasn’t supposed to be.

    Similar story..

I was playing at an event a little while back where I was asked to play Trance and Progressive. So I did. A few people came up asking where the dubstep was. I stood there, perplexed, because the flyer clearly said “Fxn-L : TRANCE & PROGRESSIVE!! Swing by for spine-tingling breakdowns and rhythms that will make you melt!” So I just said, “Maybe later.” It’s a good thing the DJ after me was lined up for “Dance & Dubstep”.

I’ll take an “honest” criticism in, regardless of whether the person criticising is a DJ himself or not, a guy who knows the technicalities or not. See, I try to live by the principle that creativity should not be elit – ised. If a guy tastes food and he doesnt like it, he doesnt like it – he is entitled to his opinion even if he is not a chef or doesnt know how to cook at all. Likewise, if a guy listening to my music/DJing doesnt like it, he doesnt like it. I’ll of course take into consideration his general taste in music (if I can), and if it coincides with mine, then I’ll have to take his criticism under consideration.

As for the “why”…I prefer to figure it out myself because in the case of a simple listener the truth is most of the times he doesnt know why he doesnt like it – i will ask for “why” though if the guy criticising is a DJ-producer.

I like honest criticisim. Most of my friends are musicians or are musical in some way or another, most of them classically trained or jazz musicians. I love it when the lend an ear an ear to music I just bought or a mix I’ve just made, they’re always good at picking out transitions and what I can do to improve them, or what songs might mashup really well, or mix harmonically. In this way, they’re really good at saying “This is shit, and here’s why…”

I don’t like it when someone just tells me its complete crap, especially when most of the other people who come up to me say I did a good job. My very first gig, a guy who I never got along with but shared the same school with came up to me very, very drunk and said some pretty nasty things about my mixing. Makes you pretty angry, especially when that guy was dancing just as hard as everyone else…
