Ironically i actually volunteered for my first club gig.It was suppose to be a gift for my nephiews birthday to have me DJ his party at one of those clubs that has two big rooms, one for events and the other as a regular club thing. So it was a bit random but in the end turned out to be really good for me.

One of my friends was holding an Australia day party at a club in TO. I am still the resident DJ for every house party my large group of friends hold (average 2 parties a month for them), so I said I’d do the gig from him. I thought it be just like a regular house party thing but at a club. Instead, it was the club being open like normal but them having the run of the place (music, photos, contests, etc) for a few hours. Met some cool DJ’s and promoters during that first gig.

Like people have mentioned…Starting at small gigs are great for learning because you can make mistakes and no one really cares as much as if you were spinning in a club at midnight and screw up 🙂

I think, my opinion, is to put your sets or podcast online. This is the new “demo” place for people to hear your music and see if it’s a good fit for their venue. Building your fan base is crucial because clubs/bars wanna know you can bring folks in. I think the biggest is to actually visit the club or venue, feel the atmosphere, hear the music they play, and get to know the right people! (It’s who you know) Then tap your friends who are big club/bar goes to help promote you…chances are someone is someone’s friend who is the manager of some bar or club!! 🙂

    Good luck and cheers!

I got my first gigs by pure luck, I was simply in the right place at the right time.

My first ever gig was in a pub where I worked behind the bar. The owner wanted to cut costs so rather than paying a mobile DJ £120 he asked if I wanted to do it for £ about £30 (what I would have earn’t behind the bar anyway.
I did it of an old PC with PC DJ on it and it was fine, faded up and faded in nothing remotely flashy but did the night fine and continued to do it for about 6 months until I left the job.

I got my first club night againn by pure luck, I was known as a bit of a character in this particular club, well known and friendly with the promoters and clubs entertainers and regularly partied with them.

They asked me to be on one of the clubs flyers so I went for the Photo shoot, got chatting with the main man, told him about my djing and he offered me a gig, this time it was at £300 a night!

I did well, got a residency eventually got board of it and packed in DJ’ing completely, the club every couple of years ask me to go back and I go and do a bit and I I have recently started playing there again as a resident on one of their chill out rooms.

The whole thing has been blind luck and personality, but I am very much investing in growing my dj skills hence the reason for joining this site and moving from a pc to a midi controller

I started showing up to open mics at bars, and pumped a little money into the bar in the form of drinks. After a while, they had an issue regarding a DJ, and I was there fallback plan I suppose.
