Forgot to mention the equipment. The club has two CDJ 900s, and a DJM-900, and I just use USB.

I think remix services do much for hip-hop. You get many of the top “hits”, only made more DJ friendly with intros and outros.

Bear in mind though in most cases they say “hip-hop”, but they really mean popular R&B and any pop music with a rap tempo. Nothing “too black” (kind of sad, isn’t it?)

I remember a former boss calling it all “chick-hop”…mainly because it was about pleasing women.

“Chick-hop” — I like that description. When trying to break it down for people I’m booking I’ll say “happy hip-hop, not the angry stuff” and that gets the same vibe across. But agree, most owners asking for hip-hop don’t really mean it and freak out if you actually give it to them.

It might be worth asking exactly what he had in mind. That should give you some direction as to where you should focus your efforts.

+1. I’d get your boss to elaborate on just exactly what he has in mind, and maybe back up that wish with a few examples of tunes he’d like to hear.

In my experience, old school hip hop tends to go over well. Whether I’ve been blaming in Bangkok, Toronto, or New York, the Jazzy/Soulful samples and feel good vibe usually work on the dance floor. There are lots of great 90’s hip hop and r&b playlists on Spotify and Apple Music to stream for exploration.

However, I agree with the other commentators that you should seek clarification from the client as well.
