Make multiple playlists with a pre-selection of music you think the people will like based on genre, time of evening, or anything else you think is a good devider. Select them like vinyl dj’s would select which vinyl they would take to a party.

If you do too little the set is very rigid with little opportunities to change your mind. If you take too much you may get lost in your collection. About two times the amount of tracks you will play seems to be a good baseline. But ofcourse opinions will vary on that. You’ll learn those things with experience.

Also, don’t be afraid to just try some things you’re not sure about. It’s ok to pick a few wrong tunes, just like it’s ok to make some mistakes. Some hotshot dj’s make mistakes intentionally to show that they are really doing the dj-ing and are not playing some pre-recorded set.

Hi, I remember once this guy saying to me that he nomraly takes one song, song A, he then takes to songs three songs that mix in a good way with song A, one that is the one he plans to play and two backup songs, so he would mix from A to B, and then C and D is backup-tracks in case the mood hanges or the dancefloor changes in some other way then he imagined when preparing. then he takes a third track, and selects two backups that mix good with this third one. so he ends up with maybe 20 sets of 3 tracks… this way he has 60 tracks… and then he chooses 20 sets per hour he plays… althoug there are many other ways of doing it
