ParticipantHellow Mark and welcome !
Seeing just how much you love to learn to scracth, Serato might be your perfect weapon of choicesApril 4, 2014 at 5:44 am #2021424Mark Vivanco
ParticipantSo I’m pretty new to this but I don’t see my Stanton and Trakor A6 equipment on the list of equipment for Serato. I do have Serato DJ for my DDJ-SX. Will it map and work perfectly with Serato DJ? While I am not experienced (at all), the little experience I have was with Serato DJ and my DDJ-SX.
After a couple of months messing around and getting a few lessons, I made my 1st mix.

ModeratorHey Mark,
As the (currently closed, but who knows reopening somewhere in the future) scratching for controllers shows, you can scratch just as well on a controller as you can on vinyl. And with a lot less hassle I might add. And with some visual aids (waveforms on screen showing where your scratch sound “sits”.
If your soundcard is not supported for Serato (or Traktor for that matter), using the software at all (Serato) or the scratch version (Traktor), is out of the question. So that would mean back to full analogue. Not sure it’s something I’d want to get into at this point of time. If you grew up using/scratching vinyl, I could see why you’d be inclined to stick with it or relearn that particular skill. As a fresh start and with the SX already at hand? I think I’d stick with Digital (mind you, this IS Digital DJ Tips, so not surprising we lean towards digital over analogue hehehehe).
And if you crave the feeling of vinyl, combined with the techonologies of digital, you can always check out the motorized 9″ platters of the Denon SC3900 😀 (I’m the local Denon buff, just so you know).

ParticipantDJ Vintage, I hadn’t known of the Denon Sc3900. My sound card does indeed work with Traktor. It doesn’t work, or appear to be compatible with Serator. I am using a Traktor A6 soundcard. I just didn’t like the feel of a DDJ-SX for scratching. It worked well, just the feel wasn’t there. I have no interest in going analog. As a true absolute beginner there are tons of questions that are 2nd nature to the experienced DJ, but for the beginner they are road blocks. Persistence is key I suppose.

ModeratorTHere is that, and asking the nice folks at DDJT helps as well 🙂

ParticipantThat is what I am hoping for. Its just being patient. When the questions arise, naturally I want an answer quickly (like now) so I can proceed. It took me over a week to get frustrated when I got my turntables and mixer wondering how do I hook this all up. Something is missing… Yeah A SOUNDCARD! I searched and searched and searched. All sorts of combinations but for whatever reason I wasn’t putting 2 and 2 together to see the missing piece until I posted a message and told what I had and was asking what I was missing. Then someone suggested a soundcard. They suggested a Rane SL2 but for the cost the Traktor A6 seemed like a better option for a beginner.

ModeratorWhich wholy depends on the software you want to use. NI is the only one selling Traktor certified soundcards (there are a few Traktor certified non-NI mixers out there). Rane is the resident Serato hardware specialist.
And the choice for software depends heavily on your workflow. So, normally (too late, since you’ve got all this stuff already) you’d figure out your workflow or what you’d expect it to be, then determine what software suits your workflow best and finally, based on available budget, go looking for the best hardware to fit both budget and workflow :-).
We are here for you if you have any questions though, so don’t be shy.
