hey ppl tips fora newbi?

I’ve been DJing for a year
Started out on VDJ just like you.

Before you start looking for gigs, it’s import to have a solid foundation. Really go back to the fundamentals. Learn how to count music in bars and phrases. Record sets and critique song transitions. Better yet, get other people to critique it too. Remember that song selection is more important than mixing.

Most importantly, what are you going to do that sets you apart from other DJs? How are you unique?

I started shadowing other DJs. I would spend hours behind the booth, watching and learning all the subtleties that go into DJing. When you’re confident enough that you have a good idea of the fundamentals, go ahead and get yourself a controller. Then practice, practice, practice.

Then, work on marketing to get your name out there. But again, you have to set yourself apart.

Let’s see. Late January 2010 was when I first decided I wanted to be a DJ. Had my first gig in May 2010.

Well I still consider myself a noob when it comes to Djing and I have about 8 months at it. My first gig was as soon as i started, Djed my friends frat party in school. It wasnt my best ever but I had the people dancing. Couple tips: 1. dont be nervous when in the dj booth, the more nervous the more mistakes you are going to make. 2. with even the smallest gig have a playlist set and ready for it. most times you wont stick to it but it will give you something to lean on just in case. 3. practice everyday and every hour. I started out with one mix that I did from scratch and that gave me more inspiration for more mixes. Now I have 5 that I have mastered. 4. dont be afraid to try new things and show your skills. one day I was bored in my dorm room and decided to go out to the hallway and dj for a bit. After 30 minutes so guys approached me and said that they needed a dj for a party that night. Landed a gig by just going out and showing people what i got to offer. Got 35 bucks free food and all the beer I wanted 😉

@willyb, yea man. Just talk to who ever is in charge of the social and give them a mix you made or show them something and you might get to dj in the event. Wouldnt hurt to try

@ djspekz, no disrespect, but “don’t be nervous” is really bad advice. And by that I mean there’s no way not to be! And when you are nervous, and you keep telling yourself “don’t be nervous” you’ll just get nervous about getting nervous. Everybody’s nervous, it’s healthy. It means you care! :p I see what you mean though.
Perhaps don’t obsess about getting everything perfect… I was watching a controller view of one of Laidback Luke’s sets, and he missed some of his cues a couple times, but didn’t even flinch, he just adjusted.. Made me feel better I’ll tell ya that much haha

I am listening to your ‘Bomb’ Mix at the moment :);
And I have to repeat again; the ‘Stutter’ Technique you have Developed is Excellent :cool:;
I was wondering if you are not Confident at the moment about ‘Beatmatching’ whether you could incorporte your ‘Stutters’ into actual Transisitions between Tracks; as that would work Really Well;
After listening to the Mix I realise that the ‘Kid Kudi’ Track at the beginning; and the ‘TPain’ Track at the end; are the Same BPM; so if you were to Practice at Mixing these Tracks again; you would begin to be able to learn How to Beatmatch 2 Tracks from One to the Other – and you will Feel So Excited when you do it 🙂 :);
Oh :(; the second video I can’t watch because of the Country I am in (UK); I don’t know Why YouTube do that;
But; to carry on from the first Video; I like your Speeding up and Slowing down that you have got the hang of; and it is your ‘Own Creativity’ that makes you Decide when to do this; so you have Talent which is Really Important !
Try the 2 Tracks I mentioned and Mix them Together and you will get the Hang of Understanding what Speeds Tracks are Originally Recorded at; and Tracks with Similar Speeds are Always Great Markers for us when we don’t want to do a ‘Cut’ (Stop Dead) Mix 🙂
