Question 1: Do you need sound for practicing in the bedroom or for playing out?
Question 2: If you need them for playing out, are your speakers PA-style speakers? If they are not, read the recent article over on the blog about using “hifi” speakers for a party.
Question 3: Tell us more about the speakers. Wattage, resistance, 2-way, 3-way, built-in passive crossover … stuff like that

My final thought would be you are almost better off getting a new set of active speakers than getting an amp to connect up existing speakers. In case of active speakers you know for sure that everything is matched up and you don’t need an extra bit of kit. Plus, if the amp fails you are out totally. If one of the active speakers fails, you can still use the other one. Both (small = 8 or 10″) PA and (small = 5 or 6″) monitor speakers can be had for a couple of hundred bucks.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have two skytek speakers with a built in amp but the sound quality is decent but i got given some million speakers i think, that are brilliant. However to use these i do need an amp. So if i was to use these could i use a normal hifi amp to connect my decks to and the speakers?

Yep Skytek would be dangling at the bottom these days. You’d have to move towards American Audio or Behringer these days to get something relatively decent for good value. In speakers it’s still true that you get what you pay for. Still, in every price and in every quality brackets there are those that do better and those that don’t do so well.

I am assuming you mean Millon speakers. Very high end hifi. And thus thoroughly unsuited for anything else. Keep them in your living room to listen to music at your leisure. Btw you’d need a very good amp (= expensive!) to make those speakers shine.

As I said in my first reply there is a recent article on the blog about not using home speakers/amps for partying. Read it and you will know why it’s not good to use those.

Personally I would not want to use those speakers for either production/practicing and most definitely not for partying. And with the price of the needed amp (and using a low power, low cost amp will make even those Millon speakers sound like cr*p imho), you would be better off getting a set of KRK Rokit 5s for practice/producing.

    Hope that helps.

Those have built-in speakers, they are active!

Depending on your budget, you can look at the 6’s, they have a little more bass.

My suggestion is to do some research on some of the terminologies and simple workings of audio set-ups, that way you understand more about your equipment.
