KeymasterI would always start with getting your static lights right. Back in the day you had to use cans with a single color, but today I would recommend going intelligent and use something like the ADJ MegaTriPar profile. Depending on the size of your venues dancefloor that can be from 2 to 20…
When you have that setup and shelved the money for those, then I would start adding flowers. I largely prefer static ones with a big angle like the ADJ Revo III or IV. Their angle is so huge that mostly you will only need a single one for a dancefloor or possibly 2.
If you have that, then I would dig into motorized things, but would start with simple moving heads, as they are far more easy to control via DMX than motor scanners. I really like the light weight of the new ADJ InnoColor Beams series for that.To control all that lights many now use software… I am a fan for beginners to get a light controller. For smaller setups I still use my Elation DMX Operator II.
Also stay tuned for our light guide for beginner series 😉

ModeratorPersonally, but that is just me, I HATE light. Not that I don’t enjoy the effect it creates, but for a mobile DJ it’s the pits. I can set up sound in less than 20mins now, light will take an extra 45-60mins, same goes for packing it all in afterwards. It takes massive extra transport space. It’s clumsy, unless you transport it in flightcases. Those have a tendency of being rather large and bulky, so even more extra transport space.
There is a lot of extra cabling (dmx and power) involved. Even if done cleverly (everything on a light bar, semi-permanently connected) you still run a lot of extra cable. You need extra heavy duty and tall stands for light.
I have now drilled it down to:
1) A flat 24 by 24 inch LED panel (actually a ceiling panel lol) that has my logo on it and can be set to either flash in all kinds of patterns or slowly change color (like a mood light) or stay in any of 16 chooseable colors. It hangs on the front of my DJ stand. Setup time about 2 mins (hook it onto the DJ stand, plug in the power supply, hit the remote for the right program, done!)
2) 4 rechargeable American DJ wireless DMX LED bars. I just toss them on the floor as wall/uplights. Set them to either follow the music (slave the rest to the first one to get a uniform behaviour) or hook up my extra laptop with DMX software
3) not yet bought, but looking at some moonflower-like effects that I can set on the floor or some crates and that I can turn on off with remote control or dmxNo light bars, no big extra stands, no extra cabling.

That is so true for me I can set up in less then 5 min if I only need to bring controller + laptop. Lights I need at least an hour I have a lot of lights enough to not have room for my car in the Garage 😀
I would also say get some LED pars first (ADJ MegaTriPar profile) and or A Revo IV (if lifted high enough it will light up a whole dance floor)
I have 16 regular LED par cans and 8 Flat pars and if you choose to get once with 10 mil LEDs (and not 3in1 color) I recommand putting a filter in front of them just makes them nicer to look at and you’ll get a nicer color blend.
That moving Moonflower you posted has a strobe but forget any hope of it making any real effect on the room.
I made the mistake of getting cheep lights when I started investing in lights (Lucky for me I could sell them all again) and most of them lost all their charm as soon as other more powerful light were on.
If you plan on getting Lasers you need fog or haze they are almost useless without it.September 10, 2013 at 7:02 pm #43994DJ Vintage
