In my opinion the only and best way to learn to DJ is to be left on your own and practice practice practice… the kit isn’t so important for a beginner, as long as it mixes two tracks its a start. in my day we learned on old belt driven turntables and by the time I could afford to but 1210’s I had learned the hard way and to be honest i feel that made me a better DJ, buy some kit you understand how to use and use it until you outgrow it, by that time you will have worked out if you can mix, and if you actually enjoy doing it, if you do you will know by then what kit is best and be more informed as to what to purchase…I would go for a cheaper controller if I was you, the ergo might be frowned upon by seasoned djs but its a start and will help you learn, some of the Numark controllers also get good reviws but beware buying expensive kit you don’t understand and may not use.

First, do you have a laptop? What are it’s specs? If it will run traktor pro nicely, then you should begin with a Native Instruments audio 2 soundcard, which will coat $100, but also get you a traktor pro liscence(i hope that is still correct)

If you really want to learn, you will focus on getting 1 hour of mixed music. Just start with that as you goal. You do not need a controller, and in fact, at the beginning stage, it is actually detrimental to understanding what is going on in he software(distracting at least)

Instead, spend your money on a nice collection of songs in your chosen dj style(genre)-spend some time beat-gridding(if you dont know what that is, please learn it)-and then work on your mix.

Practice using loops as the places where you’ll mix the songs; i.e. each song in a repeating 8 bar loop, and “mix” the loops. Once the old track is “mixed out” release the loop on the new track and voila, you are djing.

First off: Thanks Jack Hoesterey, the coupon code will be of use to me 🙂

No need to buy an Traktor Audio 2 IMO, just get an all-in-one like Mixtrack Pro, Pioneer Wego, Denon MC 2000, or a NI S2 / Novation Twitch if you want to spend that kinda money. Best bet is to go to a store if possible to find out which layout YOU like. There is no “best”.

The TA2 is a good deal for sure, TP2 license included. But NI has a sale right now where a TP2 license is only €39,- so I don’t see why you would wanna buy an extra sound interface which only unnecessarily makes your setup more complicated than it has to be or will collect dust somewhere.

Just messing with him Terry. Besides, I think this thread would be a lot more interesting if we discussed what we remember as being urgent when we were 15.;)

Anyway, this website has an awesome guide to controllers. Just like the site on facebook. It’s explained in this blog entry.
