there are videos online to show creative use of effects but the best advise anyone can take is just mess around make sure to record every mix you make and listen back after and if it sounds good then remember it for future

    Thanks for your reply.
I just seem to always end up playing track B when Track A is winding down, would love to chop songs up, go between different cue points but ends up sounding crap, now every time I sit in front of laptop and controller I just know I’m not gonna progress any.

everyone starts out sounding bad when they try to progress but its the time and effort taken hell ive been djaying for 7 months but producing for 2 years and im still not confident enough to step out the bedroom as i no playing one track into the next just sounds basic but i mess around with effects to try see what sounds alright its just a time thing, check out ean goldens youtube videos or moldover between them they basically invented controllerism djaying

    Hi Matt,

To be honest, I’ve been DJ’ing for a little over a year now and I still sometimes find myself having trouble trying to figure out unique ways to mix two songs together. A resource that has helped me a lot in developing my skills was when I recently discovered this Ebook: http://www.mixedinkey.com/Book/ It goes into detail about Harmonic Mixing and explains different approaches when mixing.

Another helpful tip would be to set various hot cue points: one on the first kickdrum of a tune, the next for when the vocals kick in, the start of the breakdown, and one for the peak of the tune so you can always easily switch between the cue points to add a little something extra to your mixes. If there is a vocal right before it I always like to have a hotcue sitting there (ie. when one song is just about to go mental I immediately crossfade and hit the hot cue that will start the “drop” of another track that is in the same key and mixes well with the previous track.)

Don’t give up, keep working at it…hope this helps! =]

Just play around with the effects, filters & loops. With these things though less is more. Don’t be that guy who flanges every mix. if you want a real challenge then get in to scratching. Its a long, hard road but well worth it.

@Schies thanks for your reply and tips, loving the Mixed In Key, gonna read more tonight (as Ive been at work) and maybe buy the software? I have started adding more cue points in my tracks, so I guess I should start and play about with them and see what comes out lol

@steelo thanks for your reply, yeah I don’t wanna use too many effects but the odd one or two would be good ( but only if it makes a great difference) not gonna use them just for the sake of it, and I deffo wont be the flanger guy lol

It’s kinda just trying to find out when to loop and what benefits it gives me, as I said before I’m just blending the tracks from the last 16/32 bars etc so I don’t really need to loop, but I wanna be creative and use loops and chop tracks up, play track A then a few more tracks then maybe stick a bit of track A back over a tune again etc, its just trying to learn when to put them bits in and when not to, if that makes sense lol
