Keep in mind, that most of the controller came with the Virtual DJ LE (Limited Edition) so theres a certain limitations to it unless you decide to purchased the full pro version of it

So it’s not an all access software??? Just a starter up? I’m kind of leaning toward Serato, reviews say its user friendly, and I need as much of that as I can get, lol. Any suggestions on a controller?

    Hi and welcome!

Well yes Serato is definitely the most beginner friendly since most of it is plug and play. Still any DJ software has a learning curve.
Also there is no free DJ software, the free version of Virtual DJ cannot be used with a controller…
Now some controllers come with Serato DJ Intro (which is a light version of Serato DJ), which is actually quite useful as long as you only use 2 decks.

    As for controller:
I just came back from Musikmesse 2014 in Frankfurt and I can highly recommend the Reloop Beatmix 2 and 4. Both Serato Controllers the Beatmix 4 for stunning 299 even comes with full version of Serato DJ.

As for the computer: You will need a real laptop PC or Mac. A tablet (as of now) is not suited to DJ with (sadly).

There are some options I have seen to be used with iPads specifically, but I think as stated above, you’re going to need a PC/Mac laptop to make it happen… I used VDJ Home(the free version) for a few weeks, getting the hang of things while researching controllers and waiting to get my first one. I am now using a Mixtrack Pro 2 and waiting for my upgrade to arrive along with the full Serato DJ software. I would say that there is only a best for YOU, not a best overall…

Serato is definitely a good start, but an evening researching the software options should give you enough to decide which is best for you. As far as controllers, I’d suggest looking into the Reloop mentioned above as it’s one of the best/cheapest ways to get the full Serato DJ software and looks like a great starting point. Others I would look into in the “beginner” range and price point would be the Denon MC2000, and the Pioneer SB/SR, as well as the Mixtrack Pro 2.
Keep in mind that pro is just part of the name, and while it’s a great learning tool and could definitely be used to play gigs, it’s not at all a “pro” piece of kit. I love mine and will continue to use it after I have a better controller, but there are some things to think about if you decide to go further with DJing. I would wager that some of the others and especially the newer controllers, may be even better suited to starting out and also good in the long run… Keep shining and keep us posted! Moonshadow
