    Hi JP,

There are a few new alternatives to getting used SL-1200s. Which would be what I’d go for nowadays.

Be aware of the following though:
    1) DDJ-SX is stand-alone mixer so can play from TTs, but is not DVS ready. You will need the SX2 for that.
    2) While controller DJ-ing is pretty cheap (just buy digital tracks @ 1-2 bucks a piece), vinyl will cost you. Initial investment at least 800-1000 bucks a pair (if you want to play out add flightcases at 100 bucks or more each). Then about 100 bucks a month on needles. And vinyls at 10 bucks and up a piece.
    3) playing out with vinyl is cumbersome. Heavy, space-consuming.

Finally, there is no real advantage (actually just going back in features) with the possible exception of scratching.

Your choice, but don’t say we didn’t warn you 🙂

Also: If you have no ideas about turntables yet, the maintenance of the 1200s will drive you crazy.
It is way better to get something like a reloop RP-8000 brand new as they are way lower maintenance. You still will spend a fortune on needles and heads, but at least you do not need to service the motor etc. all the time.

    Thanks for the replies!

DJ Vintage: I’m fortunate that my parents kept, maintained, and passed along their vinyl collection, along with a few other family members. Exploring through their old milk crates has been quite the adventure!

Ideally, I would like to make the DDJ-SX my mobile set up for gigs, and an additional standalone mixer + 2 turntables that is my main set up at home. I would also prefer the capability to switch between traditional mixing (no laptop, no software) and DVS with traktor/serato.

Terry_42: Thanks for the advice! Every article I have read online has mentioned tips for being careful when buying used 1200s, but nothing on the ongoing maintenance required post purchase. Would you recommend the RP-8000 over the Pioneer PLX-1000? Seems that the RP-8000 has more features, but doesn’t carry the “Pioneer” name. If it’s just going to be my home set up, is there anything long term that the PLX offers (better build quality etc) other than the Pioneer brand name?

    Thanks again!

Nope and in fact: There are only 2 factories in the world left that make turntables and neither brand owns them.
Having played with both I would say that the PLX-1000 is pretty much the same thing as the RP-7000 with a different case, some changed lights and brand stamp. The most important things (motor and tone arm assembly) are the same as far as I can tell.
Same goes for build quality, neither brand builds them themselves, it is an OEM product.

So, pioneer or reloop and a rane sixty-two, what do you think? Phil recomend me betewen reloop 7000 or 8000 the 7000 but I forgot to ask about the pioneers!! What’s your opinion guys? Terry_42 you said that both are the same but if you have the chance to buy one wich one you prefer?

By the way, sorry for my bad english!

    Cheers

Well, if they are the same as far as quality goes, do you want to pay (extra) for the brand name on the case or do you pick the one with the features you need for the lowest price?

    My humble opinion:

If you’re in the market for turntables either get some very well looked after Technics or get the RP-8000’s.

The reasons are twofold. Firstly, Technics have time behind them. Mine were bought in 1997, they’ve been on the road with me for years and have only been serviced once which was 2 years ago. If they have been looked after they are a great choice.
Second reason; the Reloop decks are DVS compatible and you can cue point jump and stuff using the deck itself. Why nobody had thought of this before Reloop did is beyond me. They should perform just as well as an SL1200/10 and have added features the Technics don’t have.

Anyway, that is my opinion. If it were me buying turntables those would be my options. I wouldn’t but Pioneer, too expensive for what you get which I find true of most Pioneer kit.

Thanks Staz. I love the DVS capability of the 8000, but also want to maintain full midi functionality in traktor/serato. I know the 8000 comes with a Serato midi map, it doesn’t have controller surfaces for software effects or other capabilities. Would I be better served going with a pair of 7000s, and a controller (x1, DDJ-SP1) for the various effects in Serato/Traktor?

I would buy reloop all day long. But I had bad experience with some Pioneer customer service things…
