Hi and welcome to the forum!

Well the best starter controllers we can recommend are the Numark Mixtrack Pro (I or II) and the new Pioneer DDJ-SB.

Both work well with their bundled Serato DJ Intro and can be upgraded to full Serato DJ. The Mixtrack also works well with Traktor (not included).

I have to say I am not a fan of the total control as it has not the features needed and the big software titles are the way to go and not really a budget breaker as you can go a long way with the free Serato Intro.

If you want to keep things cheap. I’d recommend Mixxx. It sure as hell isn’t as advanced as the big three. But it’s free. And if you’re willing to spend a little time mapping your controller manually, or mapping your keyboard (I have heard this is a great idea. Throw away the controller for a little while and focus solely on keyboard and mouse. Restrictions make you more creative) then you can end up doing a real banging mix. And if it is crap and you hate it, then what have you lost? You didn’t invest any money into it…

EDIT: Just took a look. Mixxx supports the Numark Total Control by default. So go ahead and give it a try, and if you don’t like it, just uninstall!

Hey thanks for the input guys. I haven’t really settled on anything yet…I just threw those out there as examples of what I have in mind.

Funny you should mention free software because I was just thinking the same thing. Why not try a free program to get a general layout and idea of what I am doing and give myself more time before I make a financial commitment to something

Again thanks I look forward to more input

I started on the Virtual DJ Home, free download… played around with it for a while, and then got a controller that came with DJ Intro…. I love it and hope to upgrade to a better controller and the full software soon… I’d say look into something along the lines of the Denon MC2000, or maybe the above mentioned DDJ-SB from Pioneer.  I love my Mixtrack Pro 2, but the cue output is just not usable for gigs, the build isn’t up to road use and haven’t round a case for it yet(although I am getting a Magma bag and decksaver soon), and the Pads(what sold me on the MTP2) aren’t that well though out in my opinion, at least not for moving beyond what it does out of the box.  Using up the top 4 pads was a bad call in my book, now that I understand more about how this all works and is used.   The DDJ-SR and Serato DJ(not Intro) is what I’m planning on upgrading to eventually, but may stick to Intro and get the MC2000 for a while, it looks to be built well, and I like the size…would still be useful for smaller gigs and house parties.  There are other options for Traktor and VDJ, like a Mk1 Kontrol S2 which might be had at a deal right now… or the MC3000 looks good to me too(I like Serato and will be doing more looking into the MC2000-3000(for use with Serato DJ), as well as using the MTP2 with Serato DJ, before I buy anything else.  Take this advice as you wish, but also know that I’m a NOOB…LOL   I would just play with VDJ and other free or trial software, until you can get something like a Denon, Pioneer, or NI controller… you will likely have lots of fun and be asked to come play music for friends and family and then……LOL    Many thanks to all who make DDJT so great!
