i used to feel the same way but i think its important to not take these things as a shot to your self esteem. good sets show that the art of djing is complex and takes decades to master. just think of their sets as a point to strive towards. this set right here was one that really made me step my game up.

A lot of them did at the beginning, specially when you dj for a radio and the crowd prefers one of the djs. I learned that its not about skills, its about entertaining. Being a classical dj house who plays intro outro is really really boring for an audience. So, to be considered good by people, even though they don’t know shit about djing, you have to entertain them and also impress them.

I repeat this story a lot, but it took me 5 years to feel I was worthy of being called a DJ – by the time I felt like I was, I was running a successful club as a full-time job and had been playing to a full house every week for a long time. Just got to keep improving bit by bit 🙂

Think about this…. there will always be someone who is better than you and someone who thinks he is better than you 😀 Rather than feeling inadequate, better make it a personal challenge to improve and master the skill.

We should not stop listening and learning.

    cheers

I cannot agree more with Phil and Youssef. Hell even me 10 years ago was better than me today… sad truth, not playing for years takes you out of the game and I have to get back on the horse slowly.
The process should never end and you should always look to improve.

But also keep in mind: An audience will hear when you have love and passion for music and put that love and passion to work. And they will appreciate that fact, even if you jingle songs on iTunes.
However you can be the technical perfect scratch DJ and beat juggler, when you do not love what you do, you will fall out of thin air…
