ModeratorSure you want every drunk ….. on the floor to have your mobile phone number?
Think having them tweet their request would be wiser in that respect.
The thing is, if you actively seek requests, people are gonna assume and expect you to actually play most of them.
I think I would pass on the idea really.

ParticipantI use post it notes and a pen, and then let them come to me 🙂

ParticipantGenerally, I don’t encourage requests. If someone is keen and they come up to talk and ask in a reasonable manner I try to accommodate them, especially if their request is within the vibe I’m playing that night. But Friday night passed, I did a small bar full of international backpackers and had the same wanker come up half the night demanding that I play Macklemore “NOW” because “Everyone will dance to it, trust me”. He even sent up his friends to ask as well. I told him from the first request that I didn’t have it and he tried to demand that I play it from youtube instead. Eventually, I had to offer a thinly veiled threat to get him to leave me alone.

ParticipantI like the idea of the hashtag. What about an app that allows you to log in with twitter, set up a hashtag, and then automaticaally/dynamically sort tweets as they come in? Multiple song requests could be tallied and put at the top of the queue, and you could swipe to delete once you played the song or something

Yeah bring a 12 by 16 foot LED wall with you, hook it up to display the tweets and the scorelist! Have an interface with your DJ software (that is also connected live to different online music stores), have a macro that automatically loads the highest ranking 20 tracks into your preparation list. Based on key, energy level and BPM it will then sort the best play order. With faultless beatgridding and a new algorithm to figure out where the intro, outro and breaks are, the fuzzy logic in your DJ software can now determine the correct in and out mix points. Set the whole thing to autoplay and come back to the place when it closes to pick up your cheque.
Sounds like my kind of way of making music … oh no, WAIT! I like standing in front of an audience and try to figure out what is the best way to get and keep them in the groove …

ParticipantI think having an app with open text fields is a bad idea – how many times have you had someone walk up and ask for “the song that goes wup-wup-wup dobbidibidy-doo you know the one with the cool chorus and the girl singer”. Exactly. Now imagine getting a million of those through this system. Not that many people know or remember the artist and exact song name, especially when drunk!

ParticipantUmmm technologically this app doesnt seem like a problem to make. It is practical problem. It is just bad idea for djs because then you can just make an app which gonna play the songs with greatest demand and sync them one into another. Mission accomplished! -NOT. DJ is here to entertain the crown in a way he thinks that gonna work. If he succeed in doing it hes good if he doesnt hes bad or just inexperienced.
There will never be an app replacing entertainment in Djing. Period.

ParticipantI’m a mobile/pub/bar DJ and I generally play most requests. I don’t personally see any need for an app.
Punter – “Have you got/Will you play……..?”
Me – “Yes”.Job done.

ModeratorHave you ever looked into how Sky Radio and it’s brethren do their thing? Not a human involved anymore. They just organised the heck out of their collection (year, genre and such) and then set their format. Now the computer selects the tunes and plays them, they throw in the ads everyday that also get played at the designated spots.
Great technology :-).

ParticipantWell the way I see most Djs doing this is with pen/paper. Or you run into various situations described on stuffdjshate.com, where the person requesting the song is rude, obnoxious, or intrusive.
I think every DJ should take the occasional request every now and then, I understand it’s the DJ’s job to read the crowd and figure out what works, but it’s arrogant to think you know better than the crowd. Personally, I take requests, but I may not play the song immidiately or at all. To that end, I’m trying to find a technological solution that works better than paper/pen or otherwise intrusive.
I’m not talking about an app that “replaces” the DJ or does the DJ’s work for them in any way. I simply want to change how requests are made, and how DJs receive those requests. That’s pretty much it. It’s still up to the DJ to decide if they want to play the song or not.
The concept of “social participation” – people pulling out their phones and voting for a song doesn’t work, and no one’s really solved this problem. I think something can be built around the hashtag idea, for djs who wish to participate
But I think in general there could be a lot done. Maybe in the future, this system could link with Serato/Traktor/etc and even find the song for you in your library. Just throwing out some ideas, based on what was discussed above.
