Well using samples rarely is a good thing. I would never overdo it.
Especially voice samples like the ones you have mentioned, I use very very rarely and as you said only in breaks. I also have some “Terry 42” voice drops, but also very rarely drop them in.

I have some “effect” samples that I use (also rarely) like:
    – Airhorn (classic DJ sample)
    – Godzilla scream
    – Get over here (Mortal Kombat)
    – Some Laser Gun
    – Siren
You get the idea. Some of them are only for certain songs where they fit in nicely, breaks or some I call my “cover up” effects in case I make a mistake I hit that sample and mix on…

Now the third samples I like if I do not have Maschine with me, are drums. I have a simple drum set with kick, snare, closed hihat, open hihat, claps and rim shots. Now to make this work you need some finger drumming practice and I use it to either:
    – Give the running song more drums to make it more energetic
    – If I mix 2 songs that do not totally mix, I play a drum pattern in between the 2 songs to cross them over
Both things need perfect timing and very good finger drumming skills and knowledge how to alter beats (so basic beat structure understanding is mandatory).

Now from what website or source could I purchase kicks, snares, etc.? I have GarageBand and I’ve played around with the beats before – should I make my own simple kick-snare beats to use on my set?

    Thanks, again!

Greetings, and welcome aboard. Although not inexpensive, a great source for samples is Beatport’s DJ Tools.

loopmasters.com is quite famous for their samples.
But there are also a lot of free options, but you have to check if their sound quality is good for each sample as most are user submitted.
like looperman.com sampleswap.org etc. most have some really bad advertising and pop up stuff going on though…

The best way to use the air horn is to couple it with a your dj name drop. Here’s how to work it into a song:

Let the song build up, and then as you are just about to get to the drop, cut in with the air horn and your name drop. BUT, here is the most important thing, make sure your airhorn and name drop are WAY WAY WAY louder than the track whose drop you just aborted.

Brilliant! The crowd will look angry, confused, and annoyed, but this just means they are LOVING YOU! Do this for at least every song, if not a few times in each individual track.

Sad thing is, a classic hip hop radio dj did this while dj’ing before a hip hop show, and it was effing tragic.

And do you continues fades in the song you just dropped or you switch to the next song ?

You can check some samples here they are free to use. I use them for my performances and have no problem at all.

Thank you for all your help! I have actually used Garageband to extract and crop many different samples from the thousand songs or so I have to enhance my DJ’ing and it’s worked beautifully. Surprisingly, some of my favorite and most useful samples and energy enhancing samples have come form the SoundCloud for free (after being pointed to this website by some of my new-found DJ peers).
