Ok. Let’s get the names right for starters, so as not to confuse anybody. Your controller doesn’t have phono out and you will not be using phono in on the mixer.

What you do have are RCA outputs on your controller and RCA inputs on the mixer.

Plug in your RCA master output with an RCA-RCA cable into the RCA channel input on the mixer (be sure to set the channel input switch to line!). If you can see both channel and master levels on your controller and you have channel gain, first run a track, set it to 0dB average with the gain knob. Now set the channel fader to full up (make sure the crossfader is off or to the side of the playing track). Now turn up the master on your controller until the master output level is average 0dB. Then go to the mixer, set the gain on the mixer so the channel input is (again :-)) average 0dB. Now you can slowly raise the power on the mixer channel fader to the desired volume for the PA.

Keep an eye on the master output level on the mixer. It too should not go beyond average 0dB.

    Hope that helps.

P.s. I wouldn’t be breaking my head over stuff with this mixer. It’s about 90 euro new, so don’t be expecting to much by way of build quality, sound quality or features.

Ah yes my mistake with the cable name. I see, that’s good, one last thing – at the club they have an RCA cable that I was told plugs into the mixer from the PA – will the mixer have an RCA output?

It’s a (very) low-end “DJ” mixer, so I am guessing there isn’t a balanced (XLR or 6.3mm jack) in sight. Which leaves RCA for output as well as for channel input.

But surely you don’t have to plug in the venue PA? Usually that is a (semi)permanent connection.
On the other hand, if they put in mixer like this, it’s a bit of a stretch to expect the rest is pro-quality and they have a serious sound engineer to set up things and maintain it.

The good news in that case is though … you can unplug the rca cable from the mixer output and stick it directly into your controllers output (just remember to stick it back after you’re done 🙂 ). In which case you can forget about their mixer. This obviously only works if nothing else is going on that depends on the mixer/PA while you are playing.

Cutting out the middle will, if not improve the sound at least prevent it from deteriorating the sound quality coming from you controller.
