My second choice would probably have been A Vestax VCI400. This would require manual mapping but its a fantastically designed and built controller. Not true. the VCI 400 comes with a default map for Traktor Pro. And the EGE version has a really tight Traktor mapping.
But I will agree that the S4 does have the tightest integration with Traktor Pro. I almost bought one.

I was fortunate to catch an open box sale. VCI-400 EGE for the price of an S4.

The thing is, I’m not a controllerist, but the integration with Traktor is second only to the S4, but with a better build quality.
And it does look better, IMHO.June 17, 2012 at 1:56 am #1006323Steelo
ParticipantThe build quality is much more rugged and its a good looking controller for sure.

You reckon? I think its well worth the dollar.

KeymasterWell the only things the S4 has going for it is features that NI intendedly has locked out to other manufacturers.
If the remix deck functions, DVS function, sample recorder and high-res jogwheels would not be simply locked down to the S4, the unit would not be considered by anyone in their right mind for this price point. I am sorry.
Even the digital jockey 3 has a better build quality, the VCI-400 would be much better at anything hands down and even the highend Hercules would give the S4 a run for its money. Even the VMS2 has a better sound quality than the S4.The ONLY reason for this unit existing at this price point is, that it unlocks features in a software… and for this is hugely overpriced. Of course if you are locked into traktor you might have to bite. I mean compare this to the VCI-380 that does also unlock Itch, but compare simply the built quality… The S4 has (if at all) the built quality of a Numark N4, put 80 bucks on top for the Traktor software and you would have a winner, again if the features would not be locked.
I am sorry if this sounds like a rant, but since I have gigged with an S4 for over 2 months I feel entitled to post my honest opinion on that unit.

ParticipantI think you have a point regarding being “locked by traktor”, I personally believe it is the best unit out there for use with traktor, having never used the VCI 400, I can’t comment on its quality but having seen the video it has some pretty cool features.
Being a noob to all this, I’m still in the market for my first controller so will take your advice on the S4 into consideration! Cheers Terry! (y)
