ParticipantThere are numerous ways to capture sound on a laptop, search around for one that works with your computer. There are also great tutorials on Audacity out there, no need to stay in the dark.
About getting noticed. Ask and thou shallt receive. The way I got my first gig is simply asking the owner of a bar, nothing more. Now I’m talking to a club to get a gig there and I’ll have to upload some promo mixes before they let me loose on their equipment. Which is only fair. I mean, how else is the club owner going to know you’re capable enough? That’s why it’s important to be able to record your mixes. You’ll never get solid gigs without them. They also offer a way to build some popularity and recognition. But beware, club gear is way different from your Mixtrack. It’s better to start someplace where you can bring your own gear and get some experience. I’m glad they never let me loose on a CDJ setup in the beginning. I would’ve made a complete mess of it.
The full Serato DJ will be much, much more than simply Intro + recording. You will be able to make better use of the Mixtrack. I also own a Mixtrack Pro II (albeit as a backup) and Serato DJ Intro kind of holds it back.

ParticipantHello Kyle,
I’m 14 too, and basically in the exact same position as you are, but maybe I’ve got a headstart (just a tiny bit 🙂 )
Don’t think that you need professional equipment to record and get noticed. I don’t have a controller, I’ve got a copy of VDJ 7 PRO and I DJ with just a laptop. I’ve recorded a good few mixes and have even been on the radio as a guest DJ. So, please, equipment is NOT your problem.I’m aware that Serato Intro doesn’t let you record but you could try this: Download Virtual Audio Cable [VAC] (or a similar application), that will allow you to route audio signal from one application to another in your computer. In Serato’s audio setup/Preferences, set “Record Out” or “Booth Out” to VAC’s input. Then you can use a program (I recommend REAPER) and set it’s input to VAC’s output. And then you could record from Serato into REAPER.
Please also note that what I’ve told you is theoretically possible, but I’ve not yet tried it. Maybe someone with Serato can give you a better opinion.
Hope I helped,

ParticipantYou can’t set a record out in Serato. Neither in the intro nor the full version. All audio routing is done automatically.

ParticipantI doubted posting this, since I’m not sure, but I believe, you could try VirtualDJ, afaik even the LE version has recod function, is free, has some live-streaming applications, and should work just fine with your controller.
Give a try, at least it shouldn’t cost you anything.

ParticipantTuomari,
Isn’t it that with VDJ, you can only use a controller for 15 minutes before you are prompted to purchase the pro version?

KeymasterThat depends Kyle there are numerous LE versions of VDJ and every one of them is different.

ParticipantI think I feel more comfortable with upgrading to the full version of Serato DJ, rather than using an LE version of VDJ…

ParticipantI think all Tuomari was suggesting was that you can try it for free before you plop down hard cash.
VDJ allows you to play with a controller for 30 minutes at a time, then you do have to restart the program, but that is quite sufficient for getting a feel for it so you know if it fits your workflow.
You can actually use it indefinitely for free if you aren’t using a controller.

ParticipantThe thing is before I bought my Mixtrack, I had a been using VDJ Home 7 for about 7 – 8 months, so I know how VDJ works and all, and I really prefer Serato imo. If there is something I’m not fully comprehending could you please tell me?

ParticipantAh, yeah, if you already have spent time with VDJ, then it’s all good. Sorry. Just making that suggestion because purchasing your software is a pretty big commitment, you’re not likely to want to switch after you’ve made that investment, but it sounds like your decision is already informed.

ParticipantBut then again, I was having vague thoughts on upgrading my controller, and possibly purchasing something that already comes with the full version of Serato DJ, but I don’t know yet… I think I’ll wait a little while before purchasing Serato DJ.
