Genres are meaningless. Quality control is everything. Develop your critical listening skills over years and decades. Don’t support the industry’s need for continual sub-division. Unity is all. Good luck!

well, I find some genre’s rather useful. As a mobile DJ there is quite a gap between Dutch and Disco LOL

While I can give names to the genres I play, my definition of them is not the same as the official definition in quite a few cases. Rather, they give label to the similarities in the tracks I enjoy playing.

As our esteemed guru, Phil Morse, clearly states in the Music Collection section of the Digital DJ Masterclass: Call the genre’s the way it works for YOU! If you think something is Soul, stick it in a genre called Soul. Never mind what the rest of the world calls it. The whole purpose of genres (and any other kinds of tags for that matter) is to be able to find similar tracks in your collection.

If you are a house DJ, you might have 6 or more different genre’s of House in your collection. If you are a Techno DJ, you might have several subgenre’s. If you are a mobile DJ, you might have only two House genre’s or maybe even just one called “EDM”.

So, while I don’t agree that genre’s of themselves are meaningless, I do agree that genre’s are only useful when you make them work for you.

DJ Vintage, and Phil, are right of course. Label tunes any way you want that will help support finding the right tune for the right moment. Know your tunes, is another golden rule, and enjoy what you do if you want others to enjoy it too.

Knowing my tunes is definitely the point… by keeping my collection small, I am very familiar with how my tracks work, and the sweet spots for transitioning. I can’t imagine being able to do as well with thousands of tracks.

That’s it, exactly. Unless you’re mobile DJ’ing in which case, as DJ Vintage may concur, all you need is everytrackanyonehaseverdancedtoanywhereever.

Yeah… if I were a mobile DJ, I’d definitely be spending more time with VDJ & ContentUnlimited, and less time with Traktor.

VDJ? You can be a mobile DJ with any software, although of the 4 I think Traktor is the least suited, imho.

I am actually keeping my request collection seperate from my core collection (which I have determined will be max. 2,000 tracks). I will have it all run through Platinum Notes, so it sounds good, is gained and non-clipped. I will also use some tools to get all the tags set correctly, so I can find stuff. But I will not import these tracks into Cross or iTunes.

My core collection I will treat like anybody else does.

I do mobile DJing with Serato just fine. And actually whitelist.com is free of charge if you have a Serato license 😉

If I were a mobile DJ, it wouldn’t be about using VDJ, it’d be about having ContentUnlimited… that is a VERY useful service if you need access to a huge variety of music.

Frankly, the thing is you don’t really want to be internet connected (preferably not at all with your DJ laptop) during a live gig (or at least I don’t).

So I’d need my spare laptop up and running, download something from CU and then transfer using a memory stick.
I think I’ll just tell them I don’t have it 🙂 and download it for next time after the gig.

That is why I like Serato whitelist. You do not need any connection for the songs. you can download them for free and be done with it.

And honestly there are loads of services for the same fee as CU that do the same.
You can integrate spotify into your Djay app even 😛

So for mobile DJing you can do it with any software and still have loads of content. (which is useless in most cases if you are prepared anyways, even as a mobile DJ prep work is more important than massive content)
