club managers shouldn’t have a problem, because all it takes is switching RCA or XLR’s to your controller, unless they are absolutely militant about not having 30 seconds of dead air.

CDJ’s are good, from what I have heard. I’ve never actually used them, personally. I skipped from analog to full digital – never did end up using cdj’s.

yeah you should be alright but ive been places where they were like you could only use the cdjs that they had. granted they were the cdj2000 pioneer joints but none the less, had to use house gear. besides there wasnt any room left in the tiny dj booth for my giant controller anyways (ns6). Id suggest not to limit yourself to just what you have, because, well you limit yourself lol. A simple adage i use for my dj philosophy is “adapt and overcome”. you have to be resilient in all facets of the dj world to stay competitive. just my 2 cents 😉

If you still want to use a controller, just get an X1 or a comparable item. They’re pretty small and can fit anywhere, no club should give you a hard time over those. Oh yeah, they’re also fairly cheap.

Depending on the clubs mixer – you could just plug your controller into one of the spare (if there are) channels and avoid dead air so to speak, and you can mix into the outgoing cd with your controller too with 0 interruptions and minimal changes as you are unplugging nothing – only plugging yourself in 🙂

With traktors HID mode it is possible to use the cdjs as a midi controller/soundcard and just use the house mixer to mix with

Just ask them if they are the artist or if you are.
I usually insist on my gear. I might even bring backup songs on USB to use with the CDJs, but usually I insist using my controller. As it is just more convenient for me and I have my sound lib setup in Serato etc.
Keep your calm, be friendly and explain to them calmly why you are using this gear. Make it clear you are not a noob, you are a professional using a pro tool.

I would just ask why they’re pushing it. If they say they simply do not want guys tearing apart their setup to put in timecode solutions, then it makes sense. Ask then if it’s ok you use your controller from just an aux input on the mixer. If it’s just the scenario that they don’t want people disconnecting and reconnecting the decks, then they should allow it.

NOW…if they’re more the smug anti-laptop guys, then I’d either decline the gig unless they let you play as you want, or learn the basics of using CDJs and just straight mix it.

I usually avoid this problem by telling the club promoter/manager/whoever is booking me that I use a laptop and controller which is non-negotiable. It helps that I use a Hercules RMX2 (just upped from original) as it has a small footprint. If there is room for a laptop stand, there is room for my controller and that most of the clubs in my city are newerish with big booths.

If I used a controller and had a chance to use some 2000 I’d jump with joy. On another note though I played a t club the other week and the was only room for 2 decks and the mixer in the booth not even room for another DJ. I got there early to swap out their 1000s with my 900s so I could my USB sticks and the other DJ’s were happy for the upgraded functions. So if I were you I wouldn’t limit yourself
