Its 1991 and Im doing my military service. My friend comes to me and hands a C-cassette and tells me this will blow your mind. This is the first time I hear mostly Belgian and Dutch techno (as it was called then). “Simple” but magically addictive tune. After listening to the tape, my soul was gone to this type of music and illegal raves was awaiting to be visited. Riiiiight and the black horse of R&S record label was among first ones I got to know.

XL recordings became one of those massive labels as well as R&S and later on Bonzai. This tune still works for me and using in mixes as well. Since I’m a complete sucker for piano loops this is among the early era piano tunes.

The third from same time frame is a tune I simple couldn’t get enough of. The blacklights, neon colors, magical moments and memories. This tune sums it all up.

For some reason didn’t get the links right there (tried twice to sort it out). The second tune was meant to be Liquid – Sweet Harmony.

Patrick…here’s that tune by Liquid…some pretty cool classic hardcore. Always loved XL for Prodigy and SL2.

The Spectrum tune is cool as well. Gonna have to pick it up if it’s online for sale, and Nomad…who can forget him? What’s funny are how my friends and I thought he filmed the video at a show…rather than use a green screen.

King of Snake…looks like we’re both on the same wavelength today, as I’m going to post a Leftfield tune as well. Did you ever hear the original 1993 version of Song of Life? It’s one of those tunes I keep on my phone. Truly a classic.

For my first pick this week, I’m following King of Snake’s praise of Leftfield with their anthem Release the Pressure:

    Title: Release the Pressure
    Artist: Leftfield
    Label: Hard Hands / Chrysalis

    Year Released: Original-1992, This version-1996
    Genre(s): Leftfield, dub, trip-hop

Leftfield has to be (in my opinion) one of the seminal acts of the 1990s, long respected for their groundbreaking work. I found it most amazing how British club magazines of the time (MUZIK & Mixmag) would literally put “Leftfield” as a genre in their music reviews…mainly because they created (at the time) a unique sound that couldn’t be easily labeled by the existing genres. Interesting note is in how Leftfield will perform live with instruments, like a band.

The 1996 version I posted is my personal favorite, as Leftfield has re-released the tune with added vocals by Cheshire Cat along with Earl Sixteen (who was on the original). Also added were ad libs by Papa Dee, which in my book gave the tune such an energy over its sophistication.

I actually first heard the tune when the documentary Pump Up The Volume popped up on the internet. It was played in Part 3, when they talked about the Criminal Justice Act being passed, and how the sound of house was changing and evolving over the 90s. There is a truth to that, as I think about where we were in 1990 and how much things just blossomed and grew beyond simple tunes for clubbing over those 10 years. One could only hope a Renaissance of such sophistication could emerge in these times of EDM.

Funny enough is I get a kick out of when my phone pops up Release the Pressure as I’m on my commute in the CTA subways.

The seocond LP I ever bought was Kraftwerk ‎– Autobahn. I was around 12 years back then. In the same year I bought also my third LP Temptations, The ‎– All Directions.
Those two really different LPs really shaped my musical taste til today.

So my 2 classics for today are:
From Kraftwerk (not from Autobahn, from a later LP) one of the most sampled themes ever:

and from the Temptations their all time classic:

Since I started on a rap(pish) track last week, let’s continue the journey in that direction. If you say early days rap, you have to say Kurtis Blow.

Pretty cool picks Gerd. Have you ever seen Kraftwerk live? It’s a hell of a visual show.

Here’s another choice from the past from me. Apologies for the quality, but it’s the only online recording I can find without me uploading an MP3 illegally somewhere:

    Title: Alright
    Artist: Anon
    Label: Neucleus

    Year Released: 1993
    Genre(s): House

I don’t have much information at all on who Anon is, but it’s pretty obvious what he sampled to make a small masterpiece. I first heard Alright on an old Bad Boy Bill Hot Mix, and just loved the sound. Maybe it’s just love for Mr. Fingers and Sterling Void.

Sorry Vintage. You can blame me for that.

So in the spirit of Flashback Friday, we want you to post one to three tunes that are classics in your heart.
