Title: Keep Groovin’
Artist: T.D.C.
Label: PWL America
Genre(s): House, Hip-House
Year released: 1990
While Chicago has been more known for hip-house, NYC did have a few good rappers lending their talents to the sound. With the group name meaning “Totally Damaging Competition”, the trio of Kool Mel, Kurt Alert, and K. Smooth only made their fame with Keep Groovin’, despite a follow-up that never went far.
For me, I mainly remember one night when local Chicago TV personality Jerry Bryant took over a UHF station for one evening and played dance music videos for a few hours, mixed like a DJ would. Bear in mind this was long before the DVDJ or any kind of actual DJ video gear. Plus Bryant had been more known for rock and alternative on his mainstay show, JBTV.
I just liked the flow and movement of Keep Groovin’. Loved it so much that it was among the first records I bought when I got serious about DJing in the early 90s. Still one of my favorite old school anthems.
