Im using Reason and Cubase for music production.

Tried FL Studio, didn’t really like it but that was personal prefrance and not the software. I think its good to begin with. If you totaly totaly new to production, I would recomend going with Reason as it teaches you what the in studio gear actually looks like, how to hook them up with wires for different effects and you won’t get sucked into all the VSTs that are available for FL Studio and other DAWs. VST’s are good but not for a begginer as it takes away from your learning expriance imho. It is much easier to get a good sound from a VST than from Reasons synths, so Reason would actually be teaching you a lot of sound design aswell.

The best option is to get demo software to decide, and also check out youtube vids on the different DAWS. Whatever you choose, its up to your ability as any software has room for growth but its up to you if you want to invest more time learning the software or less time by taking short cuts by using different or easier software. Im a short-cut kinda person myself. Music production is literally HOURS and HOURS and HOURS of time in front of a computer.

What version of Reason do you recommend?

I only ever used Reason-4 (and still do). Reason-6 seems awsome because you can record and edit sound. This is something I would get to plug my guitar in for recording and editing but since I have Cubase it would be a waste of money.

I still recomend trying a few different DAW demos before making a purchess though because you might find that you like FL Studio better.
