Like in real life, some people are jerks, others are nice, and then there is Terry and me :D.

There is no telling who/what you will run into. I have gotten to the point that I really don’t care about doing sound checks. Having been in this business for over 35 years I know that when it is really bad there isn’t squat I can do about it (apart from maybe not play), if it is anywhere near decent, I know how to quickly optimize what I can and work with what I can’t.

Bringing your own gear IS something you need to discuss up front. If you plan on bringing your own table, be sure it’s something professional and not the garden table you threw in the back of your car. Brands like E-Z Up have nice lightweight aluminum stuff that you can get with stretch covers that can be printed with your logo for example. Set up in 2 minutes, sturdy, easy to transport and very professional looking.

Most booths won’t have that kind of space though. So make sure you know in advance how much room there is (if you can’t visit, ask someone to send you a picture or two of the booth (overall) and the equipment).

I have a simple philosophy. If a venue has a fixed install, I use that if it is at all operable. If they don’t they will usually have the space to stick your own gear in. Very seldom have I seen places with a full DJ setup (like Pioneer Nexus sets) that offer room for a full controller setup. Oftentimes it’s hard enough to find a spot for just your laptop.

Don’t make too big of an issue of it with the venue owner/booker/promoter and most definitely be VERY careful with their stuff. I ask for (or have on occassion brought along) a tablecloth or something to lay under my CD-case, just so I won’t scratch it. It’s always appreciated if you show your respect for their property.

if the systemsis a proper big sound system in a club (they don’t all sound crisp and clear btw) then try to avoid letting the basslines wrestle with each other.   Some sounds you could get away with to a much higher degree on a small home system could sound messy on a big rig.
