ParticipantHi FleXe,
I just finished listening to your mix while chopping fresh vegetables for a soup 😉
First of all, I highly doubt that anyone here on the digital(!)djtips forum would blame you for using the sync-button 😛
Being able to beatmatch by ear is a valuable (and kinda hard to learn) skill to have, though.Your mix flows very vell, the only thin that jumped to my ear was the drop around 34 minutes – its too sudden and takes out too much energy. You know what part i mean?
Another thing is, to the end your mix becomes significantly louder, all of a sudden – i had to turn down my volume! Watch your gains!I also recognized some parts being off-beat, but in the viewpoint of a listener, not as a DJ, it feels not as a mistake 🙂
Everytime i hear a mix in a genre that i don’t spin (at the moment) i feel like i have to expand my music collection and dig for, in your case, some DnB tracks 😀To sum it up: Nice Mix, keep it going!

ParticipantHey thanks clockwise! That’s really nice to hear 🙂
Yes I’m aware that the last song feels a little off. It’s the Niggas in Paris (by Jay Z & Kanye West) Sub Zero Remix. He plays some pretty old school sounding dnb. I guess I could’ve put it after the other Sub Zero song in my mix, but I don’t like hearing two songs of the same DJ in a row so I decided to use it as an outro and to play it completely.
And yeah there are indeed a few parts where it’s off beat. Probably most of them occur when there is a transition from 87.00/87.50 bpm tracks. Since I don’t use the sync button, the closest I can get to 87.00 bpm from a 87.50 song is 87.05 (or 87.45/87.50) and then I have to change the pitch manually with the aid of the visuals.
Also, sometimes I like to put in some “teasers” and to “pre-mix” a bar of the next song into the first one, to continue for two more bars with the first song and to then cut off to the other song instantly. I guess it’s one of the things I do to make my work sound a bit more “unique” hehe. However, around 7 minutes I miscalculated and it became a mess because of the double bass drum. Just letting the bar finish before cutting the song seemed like my only option there…About the volume/gain; that’s pretty strange. I used the auto-gain function and didn’t touch the master volume troughout the mix. Next time I’ll surely pay attention to it!
Thanks for the otherwise positive feedback! I feel quite honoured and am glad to have introduced you to some more dnb :p

ParticipantYou’re welcome!
Sometimes I tease listeners with a snippet of a song, too. Especially during the breaks. But more often I layer things since i spin more minimal stuff.

MemberHey FleXe,
I thought this was a brilliant mix, your selection of tunes was pretty much spot on, and to be honest i didn’t really notice any of the beats being off, and i was paying quite alot of attention as i was listening to your set and just pottering around on Facebook! lol.
Although i have to agree with clockwise about the transition towards the end, you went from X-Ray into (i think it was a sugarbabes remix? haha!) into a less upbeat track, even though i thought the tune was awesome! But it did sound as though there was a bit of a key clash? I’m probably completely wrong but it just sounded a bit off to me?
You should post up a track listing if you can 🙂 And was that a remix of Warhead at 15:46? Whatever it was it was wicked! hehe!
All i can say it that you have a great feel for raising the energy and what works well together so considering it was your first mix i thought you did a fantastic job and you should definately give yourself a big pat on the back.
Really well done 🙂
Kiss

MemberOh and btw i tried to leave like 3 different comments, but my soundcloud is being proper gay and won’t let me skip to anywhere in the set without listening to the whole thing again! But some of the drops were sick! Especially about 10 minutes in i think it was? I will try again at some point but my whole comps being playing up recently so that might be the reason why lol.
Again great mix!

ParticipantHey Kiss
Thanks for your comment! Wasn’t expecting such positive feedback overall! I agree that the transition towards the end did not happen as fluent as planned. I hear a lot of dubstep DJ’s use Niggas in Paris in their sets as it’s a 140 bpm song as well, so in those mixes it blends in marvelously. Also, one of my friends really likes the song, so I wanted to play it just for her hehe. I expected the drum and bass version to suit perfectly since Sub Zero used it to end his X-mas remix as well, but I was wrong there.
The track listing is as follows:
DJ Fresh – Gold Dust (Shy FX Exclusive Re-Edit)
Logistics – Cosmonaught
Wilkinson – Samurai
Culture Shock – Troglodyte
Sub Focus – Timewarp VIP
Smooth – Virgo Cluster
Tantrum Desire – Higher
Spor – Aztec
Ebony Busters – Ra (Original Sin Remix)
Sub Zero – Your Flex (the one of which you thought was Warhead?)
DJ Hazard – Mr. Happy
Delta Heavy – Minus
Sigma – The Jungle (Sub Zero Remix)
Murdock – Black Out VIP
TC feat. Jakes – Bass By the Tonne VIP
Birdy Nam Nam – Goin’ In (Skrillex Goin’ Hard Remix)
Sub Focus – X-Ray
Tantrum Desire – Pay Your Own Way
Cyantific – The Tomorrow People
Jay Z & Kanye West – Niggas In Paris (Sub Zero Bootleg)And I can’t quite find the drop you’re talking about. Around 10 minutes I actually missed a drop from Virgo Cluster to Higher hehe. Maybe you mean the drop from Timewarp to Virgo Cluster? ‘Cause I really practised that one :p
Thanks again for the feedback! Really appreciating your opinion.

MemberYour welcome 🙂 Yeah i think that was it! As i say my whole soundcloud just froze up so i couldn’t remember the exact time but i think you right! That tune at the end by Cyantific was really good, i’m definately gonna have to download that one me thinks 😉 Well done though FleXe, looking forward to your next mix for sure 🙂

ParticipantI enjoyed that mix! Nice tune selection and overall good mixing.
One point for improvement would be key-matching. Some of your mixes were technically sound, but the keys of the songs really clashed and messed it up. I noticed this with the 2nd and 3rd tune and at some other points in the mix as well. Especially when trying for a long overlap between songs it’s important to keep an eye on your keys.
Definitely interested in the next mix, keep ’em coming!

ParticipantHey thanks for the comment DJimC. I’ve been working on a new mix for the past few days, which I already uploaded in this section. I guess that one was mixed a bit better, but the key clash issue is probably even worse there, hehe. Maybe I should invest in some software like Mixed In Key, although I think I’d be relying a bit too much on it.
Do you have any tips as far as key matching goes?

ParticipantOne very simple guide to harmonic mixing can be found here: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2011/05/beginner-1-2-3-of-mixing-in-key/
I use VirtualDJ and that takes care of key detection, but if you’re using traktor or serato I suppose a third-party application is needed. I’ve heard good things about mixed-in-key, but there are also free/open-source options like keyfinder: http://www.ibrahimshaath.co.uk/keyfinder/
Good luck with it and I’ll definitely listen to the results
