Congratulations – I’d say start finding stuff you like in that genre so you don’t get so caught out again. You’ll learn loads from analysing that few hours over the next few weeks!

I did something similar at one of my first EDM events. Only I made the rookie mistake of playing fever-pitch progressive trance at like 8pm, and that’s all I had on my memory card because I was just starting out. Never made that mistake again, now I’ve got tracks from a big variety of genres, BPMs, and keys. So I know that feeling, man.

Unfortunately I don’t know anything about mixing hip-hop, and I’ll probably be watching this thread to learn a little more myself!!

Even though you dont like the genre, If I was you,I would go checkout a hip hop club/bar to see what the djs are playing. Personally ,i have music for every taste, just in case I come across a similar situation as to yours. You handled it pretty well.I know other djs whom would of got into it with the patrons

At least you were wise enough to play the hip-hop that you did have! The only thing I can think of is just expanding your hip-hop library a bit just in case. Also, if you have any friends that are really into that genre, ask them maybe once a month if there are any big songs out. I personally don’t follow that genre but my friends really like it so when we go out to a club, it helps to know what the crowd is listening to. But yea, not a bad gig at all considering the circumstances.

I wouldn’t call it bad. Painful, yes, but you did well! The crowd just doesn’t understand, though :/ I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread though, because I’ve been realising that I do need to widen my styles a bit (although I don’t have any live gigs yet, so thankfully I haven’t run into this problem).

that’d be a nightmare situation for me haha all the hip-hop I have is old. At least by club standards. Most of my not-old-school stuff is from 2008-09. It’s hard to keep up with a genre you don’t listen to they need to invent some program to do this for you.. haha

Not sure if i can do this here. But, look up DJ Mebbe on the web. Once a month he puts up new hot hip hop for download. usually stuff that isnt even on the radio yet.

As far as mixing hip hop. cue point the fist down beat of the song & slam in next song after a phrase. or do 4 bar loops to mix in. hip hop doesnt usually have long intros/outro to mix in & out… but, using your looping within the software will allow you to extend these. phrase matching is another way but you have to know the songs.
