DJ Skittles
MemberI can see where you all coming from definately. Im the type of DJ who just wants to mix everything, but not all events need it. I go to and see on youtube and stuff a lot of “superstar DJ” shows and events, so going from that where everything is mixed to a guy standing there just switching volumes really pissed me off. I just feel that if your going to DJ a 1000+ ppl college dance party, then a least mix a little bit you know? Or change up the track-list, put just a little effort into it

MemberI started on 1200’s with a shite mixer and learned to beatmatch when I only had 3 records. I now use sync mostly for quick tempo adjustments then turn it off. However, I find it funny that people think sync solves everything. For one, if you don’t have your tracks perfectly beat gridded, you will not sound good even with sync. I can promise you I spent more time beat gridding 2000+ tracks than anyone has learning to beat match. Secondly, the sync button does not make songs sound good together… neither does beat matching them. You still have to know what the fug you are doing either way. A proper mix is a proper mix no matter which method you use… and a shit mix is shit.
I agree with a previous poster… it is sad we can’t get away from hate even on a digi DJ forum.

It’s always about you, that’s why you’re the DJ. If it wasn’t about “you” there’s be another DJ there or a Juke Box. The first time something goes wrong it’ll be you the crowd looks to or boos.

So you’re saying DJing is all about being able to beatmatch?? Man you need to get out more. There are tens of thousands of DJs out there who have been playing for decades, filling dance floors by doing the most important thing a DJ can do – picking the right tune to play next – in musical genres that you can’t actually beatmatch to.

BenHey, it’s fine to have your opinion, and sharing them is what this forum is all about, but please show some respect for other peoples point of view instead of rudely discounting what they have to say. This is a friendly and tight community here – if you want to start getting obnoxious go hang out in the conversation threads at DJTechtools.

InactiveYour opinion is fine but FYI not shared by everyone. If you think sync is cheating, using a CDJ and selecting the BPM based on auto-analysis down to two decimals and then using a starting cute point is cheating as well. Or only DJ:ing with tracks made in DAWs so the BPM rate is steady compared with live drummers and no click track. Or, pure vinyl DJing with live bands is the only real DJ art form. I don’t think so.
PS: I did DJ with such vinyl tracks in the early eighties and I don’t consider sync being a cheat at all.

InactiveIf this is true, you should start with vinyl and funk tracks from seventies before you even get close to a CDJ. I assume you have done this, right? Otherwise you don’t practice what you preach. Or, you are cheating as well… Or, are you avoiding cue points and selecting BPM on the CDJ, just mixing with your ears starting the tracks anywhere? If not you are indeed cheating.

InactiveWell, we might disagree then because for me the cornerstone of DJ:ing is to get people to dance. You might not sync or sync but if people leave the dance floor, you are doing a bad job as a DJ. Going back to the original ‘fake’ topic of having a fixed set, there’s no flexibility, the fixed set has five dubstep tracks in a row and the floor is cleared and the club/bar owner gets really mad as people leave the establishment… Sync or no sync, doesn’t matter.
